mego.racing.at already arrived at the race-track on friday morning,
trying to get the optimum setup for this very fast track. The tests
went pretty well.
Saturday morning was a big mess & stress, as around 130 drivers (in
six different series) tried to find the final setup for the
qualification.
For us the free practice was an easy game and Mario ended in 3 runs
with the 2nd time.
The qualifying session in the afternoon gave us some headaches. To
deliver a perfect time in only 7 laps, you need to have a free track
in front of you.
We didnt. After 2 warm up laps, Mario was accelerating hard out of corner 1,
only to find a slower driver in front of him, occupying the middle of
the street and Mario tried to go through on the inside. That didnt
work as expected, so Benjamin Frank (651) had to quit the qualifying
as he hurt his hand, Mario continued the session with an ugly bend
front wheel suspension, only to finish 18th (of 31).
Sunday started with ligh snow, topped by some sunny spots. As the
weather was changing, so did the 2 races.
As expected, race 1 started with a crash just after the starting
straight while breaking hard in corner 1. The dilemma happened 5
drivers ahead of Mario and he was involved without any chance to keep
out of the mess. Mario was able to get out of the cluster and
continued the race, only to go extremly wide - close to the
neighboring dirt track - while accelerating onto the start/finish
straight.
So the complete field was gone after lap 1. During the race, Mario
managed to overtake not less then 10 drivers - 3,5 in only one corber
- and finsished 18th.
So our position on the starting grid in race 2 was set to 18. The
situation was a mirror of race 1: Mario had to go via the grass in
corner 1 to avoid the obligatory mess of the corner 1 crash, and the
rest of the drivers where gone again. Again Mario was going through
the field like a knife through butter, but crashing into Pezi
Bergmann in the final corner left again only position 18 after
lurching over the finishing line.
We couldnt reach the goal for the first race, to make some points.
Nevertheless the awereness of testing, qualifying and the race verify
our goal for the season - a top position in the RMC 2002 final
standings.
