Using the guitar as part of a complex electronic instrument, Toral has collaborated with Jim O'Rourke, John Zorn, Sonic Youth, Rhys Chatham and Phill Niblock and played in many European countries and in several states in the US. He's also a member of MIMEO, the electronic orchestra featuring Keith Rowe, Christian Fennesz, Peter Rehberg, Kaffe Matthews and many others. Being also active in visual arts and mixed media, he has produced four video works, collaborated with Paulo Feliciano on the mixed media installation "Toyzone" at the Sonic Boom sound art exhibition in London, 2000, and produced several other installations. His european 2002 tour presents a new performance work, Electric Babyland. What is Electric Babyland? It's a project for live performance. It consists of several pieces to be performed on a little music box and electronics. Inspired by my previous 7" single "Lullabies", this is an expanded work using this instrument. What do you mean to do? Face the challenge to compose melody-based music (it's written by punching holes on a card) colliding with a sound-based approach, which mine has always been. The music box has a fixed sound and just plays notes. They'll have to blend and survive the more or less radical sonic treatments i'll give them. How does this project relate to your previous guitar and electronics work? I've been using the guitar as a sound generator inside a more complex instrument, composed of several electronic devices. Now i'll be using the same electronics, but the guitar is being replaced by a music box. The same approach, but a different sound source with quite different rules.
