Hi, I'm Cimeon and I've just discovered that there is such a thing as idm....please forgive my ignorance! I do of course know a little Aphex Twin but other than that this is all new to me. I'm a student studying Composition at Trinity College of Music in London and i've only really become interested in dance music recently - probably due to the fact that I love dancing and the clubbing scene in London is fantastic. I'm a classical musician but i like many good examples of practically every genre of music i've come across. i'm intrigued by the idea of dance music you can listen to, and i mean really listen to and not just passively hear which i think many people do do nowadays Could someone please suggest where i should start in terms of listening to give me a good introduction to idm. If it helps my particular favourite music genres are modern classical, modernish jazz, (hard) house and more recently Drum n Bass. Cimeon PS. In my humble opinion i don't really see how someone could copyright a production technique, as integral to a track as it may be. Musicians have always "borrowed" ideas off each other, not that i'm saying we should steal ideas... i think it probably comes down to whether someone is developing an idea or just copying it. _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Based on what you've said, pretty much everything by Squarepusher will meet your interests...in fact, everything you listed as your interest except for the "modern classical" genre he has explored, in most cases ending up worlds beyond anyone else. He has been my top choice since I heard the opening line of Come on my Selector four years ago. I would say his albums Big Loda, Music is Rotted One Note and Go Plastic to really get an idea. Oh, and I'm not sure that it's trendy to like him now adays... So, be careful for the image. He is a good one to start with, and rather popular as far as idm goes. But then there lies the problem of popularity hindering the idm-ness of an idm artist. There problems and more on the hyperreal idm mailing list! Anyway, welcome to the list. It is very, very educational. Cimeon Ellerton <e_cimeon@hotmail.com> wrote: Could someone please suggest where i should start in terms of listening to give me a good introduction to idm.
