I just read a little interview with Bob Mould (ex- of Husker Du and Sugar) previewing his show in Toronto next week, and it mentioned that he used a lot of electronics on his new album, "Modulate". I followed up with a websearch and found the site of his own indie label, Granary Music. There I discovered that in addition to "Modulate", he's also recently released a disc under the project name LoudBomb which is a pure electronic record which is described as "chilled ambient beats to early '80s funk pop, from found-sound breakbeat to heavy distorted house". As someone who was a fan of both the Du and Sugar back in the day, I'm really interested in knowing how these albums are. So has anyone here checked them out? I haven't heard it, but word from the record store mates is that it sucks hard. I found him to be hit or miss after Zen Arcade, and I suspect he still is. Incidentally, one of the reviews claims he also writes scripts for the WWF ... On Thu, 4 Apr 2002, Greg Clow wrote:

oh gawd.. the new bob mould album is just beyond horrible.. stay away at all costs. it saddens me that mould would resort to something like this. but i kinda had to question his sanity when i found out that he had turned into a full time writer for the wcw/wwf shows. Modulate basically sounds like a horrible cross between erasure and new order, with a very small bit of grittiness thrown in for good measure. i personally think he just lost every fan he's had over the years with this record, im not sure what he was thinking.... the album has the laughing stock of the past week at record stores everywhere. go, buy it now! :) -k --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

That's alright, I was disappointed years ago...Went and saw a Sugar show in Cleveland, and the bassist sang most of the songs. I really think the Sugar albums are pretty great, especially the EP, but man, that performance was pretty bad. Very disappointing. It's funny. Recordings work in strange ways. A new record can come out, and it can either make you forget all that came before it (take the BeeGees, for instance :) or you end up longing for the old stuff (Bob Mould). Then people go to performances and are satisfied with hearing, almost verbatim, the "album version" of a song. Blah, blah, blah... __________________________________________ Christopher Sorg Multimedia Artist and Instructor The School of the Art Institute of Chicago http://csorg.cjb.net csorg@artic.edu --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Maybe he's just doing what makes him happy as a musician and doesn't give a shit what people think. I'm not a fan of any of his music, but I can respect that attitude if that's what his is. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
