DEAN DECOSTA
Since he began djing in 1994, Dean Decosta has always held the art of
mixing in high regard. Having performed in Canada, Mexico, and on both
coasts of the US at underground gatherings and clubs alike with some of
the finest talent on the planet, he is a seasoned technician. Over the
years, his incredibly deep and introspective sets have offered audiences
new perspectives on the state of modern music.
Dean takes a micro-technical standpoint regarding his mixing; opting for
long, seamless mixes and subtle, yet precise use of equalization to
truly enhance the tone and mood of the music rather than to simply "wow"
the crowd by dropping out the bass now and again. Atmospheric
soundscapes are created with a fabric of deep, minimal, avant-garde
house and techno, often with a strong dub-reggae feel. With Dean's
music, the low frequency range of the sound spectrum must be properly
represented (through sound reinforcement) as it provides the backbone
for the often sparse instrumentation. In other words, thick, bass heavy
grooves are the order of the day.
Dean's need to further expand on his musical ideals means that studio
time is a daily neccessity. Beginning in 1997, his commitment to
learning the art of production and sound design has now begun to earn
him respect from his peers worldwide. His sound takes its cues from the
german minimalist movement, UK innovators such as Matthew Herbert and
Lee Norris, and the jamaican dub producers of the 70s and 80s. Found
sounds and processed textures are combined with moody, bass laden
grooves to create music that rewards the patient ear; at once dark,
cold, and synthetic yet soothing, warm and strangely organic. Although
Dean will be the first to tell you that he's only begun to scratch the
surface of this complex world of sound, his productions show the
maturity and attention to detail found int he music of some of the top
artists in the genre.
Currently, Dean has productions on Mosaic, Stir15, Lo-Fi Stereo,
Background, Plug Research and 240 Volts.
