i saw the chicago show here at metro. aside from metro being kind of a poor
venue for electronic shows (when will people realize that rock music and
electronic music shouldn't get the exact same mix treatment), it was a good
show. it was excessively loud in my opinion, so i would recommend earplugs.
mira calix... yawn. i'm not a big fan of her recorded work, and i would much
rather have heard plaid or nobukazu takemura play longer than "watch" her
spin records. it made a decent filler between sets because the musical
selections were not bad, pretty typical warp IDM (what else would you
expect, after all). her DJ sets were very, very long. in fact her DJ sets
out-totalled takemura and plaid's sets combined i think.
takemura was great, very true to his CDs, crossing between dense, more
abstract glitchy stuff and more pop-tinged, singing-computer-vocoders with
beats. the video for nobukazu was a lot better this time around (i saw him
open for Tortoise in cleveland last year and it was very boring), complete
with claymation and animation.
plaid was excellent, a bit harder than they are on disc generally. i only
recognized two tracks from "Double Figure," and i think the rest was new
material. a lot of it I suspect is on the "P-brane" EP which is being
released officially by Warp in a few weeks. It's also being sold currently
on this tour, but I didn't purchase it. There are a variety of CDs and
T-shirts on sale, at least there were here, so there will be plenty to
choose from.
I don't know if Plaid is doing the same performance every night or not, but
they used the same video on this show that they used the last time they
played in Chicago (so I've been told)... and they finished off with a truly
bangin' 4/floor track that took me by surprise, but it sounded great.
enjoy the show!
