SONAR 2002 PROGRAMME PREVIEW
For the ninth consecutive year, SÓNAR is once again an essential
venue for those wishing to discover the latest trends in electronic
music. A meeting point, highly receptive to the pulse of the
avant-garde, that offers to a varied public the formats of a sound
laboratory, a leisure area, a museum, a conference and professional
convention hall. Music, audiovisual arts, digital creation and
thought converge in this absolutely essential event.
As in previous editions, SÓNAR once again anticipates and offers a
detailed scan of avant-garde creation of our times and opens the way
to proposals that have a specific and seminal impact on electronic
culture. The programme is open, rich in nuances and for another
consecutive year embraces different artistic manifestations (music,
film and electronic art), patent testimony to the ever increasing
promiscuity amongst disciplines.
Sound manipulation and rhythm research, the new forms of landscaping
and a spirit for experimentation are the defining characteristics of
a new generation of artists whom SÓNAR BY DAY has opted for. The
repertoire of artists -Cex, Dntel, Lali Puna, Donna Regina, Static,
Isan, Wobbly, Balago- come from fields such as indie, pop,
experimentation or contemporary music, and coincide in their use of
digital tools with which they produce pieces beyond classification by
means of microscopic sounds, glitches and abstract, highly emotive
melodies.
Within the music programme of SÓNAR2002, the showcases and SONARLAB
standout once again as presentation formats for the work of record
labels and artistic collectives. In this editions SÓNAR will offer an
overview of the productions and latest releases of renowned
international labels -Morr Music, City Centre Offices, Staalplaat,
Karaoke Kalk- with special emphasis on the Californian electronic
scene represented by Musork, Tigerbeat6 and Plug Research. Special
mention must be given to the participation of record labels from
countries that normally have limited resources for promoting their
national production such as Escuadrón Sudaca (Venezuela).
Convinced that leisure and experimentation are not necessarily
antagonistic, SÓNAR BY NIGHT once again opts for a programme full of
stylistic nuances that go beyond the usual club context. Its three
stages -SONARCLUB, SONARPARK Y SONARPUB- will offer very adventurous
proposals such as Andy Votel or Sirconical as well as great names of
dance music such as Richie Hawtin, Carl Cox or Óscar Mulero. Other
highlights are the appearance of the kings of techno-pop Pet Shop
Boys, the live soundtrack from the film by Jean Painlevé The Sounds
of Science which will be interpreted by Yo La Tengo, and the dj set
performed by the British Alison Goldfrapp.
Although SÓNAR dedicates most of its programme to concerts and Dj's,
the rest of its activities are directly linked to musical creation
either through their implicit subject matter or because various
artistic disciplines coexist in the same support. All the activities
combined in their diversity, and especially SonarMatica, the
multimedia area, are fundamental ingredients that endow the festival
with character, variety and a differentiated personality.
After having previously presented the creative realities of
Barcelona, Berlin and London, SONARMÁTICA2002 now turns its eye to
Helsinki. A guided tour through the most breakaway and original
activities that take place in the Scandinavian capital, with a
special emphasis on the area of digital creation and new
technologies. In this section, some of the highlights are the
installations of Tommi Grönlund and Petteri Nisunen as well as the
works of the Katastro.fi collective, one of the most influential and
innovative multimedia art platforms on the European scene.
