I just gave "Alright on Top" a spin and I find it to be a perfectly acceptable technopop record. It's not the record I would expect from Slater - even not the technopop record I might expect from him, were I to expect one - but nevertheless I think it's a fun record and fits comfortably within the genre. Maybe it is Luke looking for a few bucks, but I won't fault him for that. Indeed, I think it is a GOOD technopop record. The vocals sometimes remind me of Ray Davies...? It has some of Luke's signature drive under the candy coating and, well, a LOT of technopop is about the candycoating. jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think he gave in far too quickly and easily to "make a pop album" -- sounds like he took notes while listening to a few Depeche/Moroder records and presto, he's got a pop record... As for the vocals, I think he could've done much better too. At his best Ricky Aloof sounds like a second-rate Jason Pierce (Spiritualized), at his worst he sounds like a fourth-rate Horace Andy.
