As far as Venetian Snares goes, I couldn't really ever get into his stuff until the most recent Dolls Dolls Dolls thing out on Hymen which I think is pretty amazing. So maybe you should check that one out. The samples from his upcoming thing on Planet-Mu sound even more incredible. I'm still not much a fan of the earlier stuff, but it seems like a lot of other people are. Can't really help with the others. -Aaron ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dr. Angel F. Metamatics: "From Death to Passwords" on the Neo Ouija label... really essential stuff. Very melancholic, pretty IDM instrumentals, with a few little vocal samples and spoken bits in between tracks. I'd heard previous Metamatics releases and not been particularly interested by them (especially the one on Dot, which I've heard is the least successful of the lot). Also, the side-project Norken, which is more along the lines of light Detroit techno, is worth checking out, too. Safety Scissors: "Parts Water" (Plug Research) From what I know this is the only Safety Scissors release available on CD. He has several releases on vinyl, though. SS is pretty much stripped down tech-house sounding stuff, with some more downtempo moments. "Parts Water" crosses over between these sounds continuously over the course of its duration. My favorite material from SS are the tracks on which he sings, in a not-so-great voice, but it seems to work really well for whatever reason! Venetian Snares: I've heard "Songs About My Cats" which I thought was alright. I'm not really wise to the hype that VS has been getting on this list... pretty crazy typical Planet Mu type stuff, verging on irritating. I thought the release with Speedranch was pretty interesting though, because it took the noise/hardcore aspect a little further (from what I recall, I only heard it once). Twine: they've definitely changed a lot since their first release. I would highly recommend going for the "Circulation" LP on Komplott, or if you are limited to CD only, I would hold out and wait for the "Recorder" disc which should be released by Bip-Hop any day now. The early stuff is a lot more conventional and touches much more heavily on typical electronic sounds of the time (1998-99) and drum&bass breakbeat... they've more or less completely ditched any references to these types of music and are what I only really could call melancholic, abstract avant-garde... You can get a sense of what the Komplott release sounds like if you check out the Hefty Immediate Action series, the 3rd 12" of which was done by Twine (this is compiled on the IA 2CD set too). _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yep, that's right.

Hmm... I dunno, I think his sound has a bit more going on than just that. There're live guitar parts, all kinds of clunky percussion bits (a la Herbert/Doctor Rockit) and the vocals you mention. I wrote a review of three Plug Research releases for Igloomag.com ... here's what I wrote about 'Parts Water': The only Safety Scissors stuff I had heard prior to 'Parts Water' was his EP on Force Tracks, which I'd describe as fairly typical of that label: dubbed out tech-house. This album, then, came as quite a surprise. It begins with "Two Letter U's", a swinging thing with a slow groove pushed forward by stabs of what may have once been a horn section. The feel is fairly driving, but constantly falling back to a scattering of digitally mauled sounds. As the track develops a jokey organ solo bursts out of nowhere, followed by a vocal part that sounds more like a recording of a slightly disappointed drainpipe. Not quite what I was expecting, I have to say. I had been told that Safety Scissors sings on this, and plays some guitar, but I wasn't really ready for the light-hearted mash up that constitutes most of Parts Water. The tech elements I was anticipating are there, particularly on the full blown song "Stormy Weather" and the instrumental dub out "Before(Less)", but they are only a relatively small part of the whole proceedings. While loads of fun, a lot of the tracks on Parts Water sound a little awkward and lacking in a mood that pulls the interesting elements together. Probably for this very reason, I found the vocal tracks to be the most successful on the whole. If you are not one for words in your music, then steer clear. - Since I wrote that review in November I've listened to the album maybe 5 times, if that's useful info to know.
