Hey all, For those of you IDMers out there who enjoy quality, independent hip-hop with a twist I thought I would indulge in a bit of shameless self-promotion. While I realize most of you will be unable to make it, I figured that since i sent this post out to about 8 million other people that I would foward it to you all as well. If nothing else, do yourselves a favor and check out the new "Koolmotor" album by Five Deez. It is hip-hop unlike anything I have ever heard. Ill atmospheric stuff with a flavor all its own, fractured breaks, House, etc. all in the name of hip-hop. J~ All: If you have ever loved good vibes and good music, if you have ever wondered why there is never a hype underground show in Columbus, if you despise the bullshit bling-blingin' on MTV and BET, if you have ever wanted to represent this thing we love called Hip-Hop...PLEASE ATTEND AND PLEASE FORWARD THIS MESSSAGE TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW!!! This show could be the first of many like it if it is succesful, but that depends upon the turnout of step #1. Do your part to support underground Hip-Hop in Ohio...support this show! Not only would it be nice to see a good crowd turn out to see some tight performances, but it would be a great feeling of pride to see some familiar faces in the audience there to support On the Floor, as we have worked extremely hard to see this effort through to fruition. Thank you all for your continued support, and we hope to see you there. Peace, On the Floor Productions: Jason Stickel Derek Johnson John Vishak Jerome Edwards On the Floor Productions Presents Hip-Hop Workshop With the unbelievable amount of talented urban musicians emerging from the state of Ohio, coupled with the ever-present Hip-Hop fan base searching for an affordable alternative to the sky-high ticket prices of some touring acts, it is a pleasure to announce the March 9, 2002 Hip-Hop Workshop. To be held at The Newport Music Hall (centrally located on Ohio State University's campus at 1722 N. High St.), On the Floor Productions will be presenting nearly four hours of live music to the masses for their collective listening pleasure. The premise behind the show is that of showcasing the skills of some of the most prolific up-and-coming artists of the Midwest underground scene, as well as displaying the diversity of genres that encompasses Hip-Hop music. The mission is simple - provide the artists performing with an opportunity to convey their messages to as broad of an audience as possible. Some of the groups represented regularly sell out tours overseas, yet they can't even get exposure in their own hometowns. As a result, we can give people more bang for their buck. With pre-sale ticket prices selling for $13 per head the aim is to bring the music to inform people of what is going on in their own back yards. Of the three crews represented, 2 hail from The Heart of it All - right here in Ohio. Cincinnati-based Five Deez is one of the more inventive and genre-bending "Hip-Hop" groups out there at the moment. Producer Fat Jon is the primary beatsmith who, with the creative influence of the rest of the group, writes everything from incredibly fluid, earthy jazz-tinged tracks to the more ethereal yet melodic broken beat and House numbers. But don't let this descriptor fool you - the crew knows how to rock a joint old school style, complete with the turntablist tricks of DJ Pase Rock. From downtempo smoothies to the most amplified of headbangers, the thought-provoking lyrical content of the group's emcees is not to be overlooked. Five Deez flows with the best of 'em, no doubt. Hailing from Pittsburgh and Columbus respectively, Lone Catalysts' J. Sands and J. Rawls continue to make their mark on the Hip-Hop world. As evidenced by their inclusion on virtually every artist compilation worth mentioning in recent times, Lone Cats have kept themselves busy. Sands' knack for weaving stories the audience can relate to into his rhymes is an appropriate match with producer/DJ Rawls' gift of groove. Their first major break came with the 1998 Mos Def and Talib Kweli collaboration on the Black Star project. Since that time Lone Catalysts have put out singles on New York's seminal Rawkus Records and Nervous Records labels and released the full-length "Hip Hop" album to critical acclaim, not to mention the acclaim of Rawls' "The Essence of..." solo release which has received rave reviews from the likes of URB, XLR8R, The Source, etc. As if that wasn't enough, Oakland's Zion I will bring their informed consciousness to the forefront to round things off. Call it intelligent, call it conscious, call it whatever you want, it's great Hip-Hop music any way you cut it. Zion I brings Bay Area flavor to an already notable line-up and is guaranteed not to disappoint. Keeping true to the theme of promoting all aspects of definition-shattering Hip-Hop, Zion I is known for their dynamic Jungle/Drum 'n Bass beats and their refusal to be confined by one style. Their "Mind Over Matter" album was named one of The Source magazine's top 5 underground releases of 2000 and the list of artists this crew has worked with is a virtual who's who of the Hip-Hop world...Planet Asia, Living Legends Crew, Rasco, etc., etc., etc...On top of that, Zion I has recently released a cut on the new Drastic Jungle Project compilation amongst artists such as Bahamadia, HIVE, and Ming & FS. Opening things up for the evening will be Dayton's Amin Drinks to provide some turntable action to get things started and Storm will provide ample emcee duties throughout the event. Doors open at 8 p.m. and tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster ($13 pre-sale/$15 at the door). For additional information please contact the On the Floor Productions info. line @ (614)470-2539. This is an all ages event.
