firstly, there's no real context provided to those of us who haven't read these interviews, so i'm going on what you've cited in your original post:

if the album was still forthcoming at the time, one might assume that they are at least in part justifying the long delay between full-length releases. After all, 4 years is a considerable amount of time.

To us, perfect music sounds >sterile and dead. The tunes we write are imperfect, the sounds are >imperfect, even the artwork. I can't listen to perfect music, it bores me. >We actually put a lot of effort into making things rough and difficult and >noisy, even more so on this than on the last album."
One might also draw the more likely conclusion that they are striving for "perfect imperfection".... i.e., their idea of a perfect album is not one that is technically flawless but one where every detail, glitch, mistake, error, sounds just right to their ears. And I can't argue with that logic.... if in fact that is the case, they've done it quite well on the latest.

Boards of Canada are make some great music (to my ears anyway) and they've never struck me as a highly philosophical band.... so I personally don't feel too betrayed by any incongruencies in their interview answers. Moving on to other (more interesting) things: the new Metamatics album is completely gorgeous. And I haven't even completely finished listening to it. I'm not that well-acquainted with their backcatalogue (although I like the Norken releases) but from what little I recall, this latest one is a significant improvement. Also the Peter Licht 12" that was recently released (includes remixes by Ellen Allien and TokTok) is pretty nice, somewhere between techhouse and German pop rock. Other bits: -The new Rosy Parlane, which I believe was mentioned briefly, on Sigma Editions, is outstanding. It's vaguely in the Fennesz/AGF/Oval school of fuzzy ambience, strange manipulated source sounds and occasional swells of feedback, but it's consistently quite pleasant. -Little Computer People Remixes CD (Psi49net): the LCP track from Anthony Rother's disc under the same name appears in several remixed forms... some are more successful than others although it manages to stay interesting over the course of the whole CD. I haven't checked out the video clips yet though I plan to soon... LCP is Rother at perhaps his kitschiest but it's good fun. He also just released another 12" on his Psi49net label with Larry McCormick called Netzwerk "Florida" which is pretty strong, too. -On Var.Art 12"EP : I don't recall seeing this mentioned much but it's a handsome IDM various 12" including EOG, Funckarma, L'Usine and EU. The A side (EU/L'Usine) is really nice, slightly more sparse, delicate IDM tracks while the flip is a bit more active, relying more on typical clean breaks but still falling neatly under the usual DUB sound (though less aggressive). I wasn't otherwise familiar with the On label but this gave me a pretty good first impression. -Ellen Allien "erdbeerdmund" 12" (Bpitch Control) : downright oddball 12" from the owner of the BPC label. Off-kilter arrangements, weird beats and a funky as hell B-side along with some great 80's throwback art direction... can't go wrong! gradually getting thru a stack of new vinyl and CDs so beware the possibility of more brief reviews in the next few days.... _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
