I'm personally quite a fan of the Tresor crowd. In general they continually crank out releases of hard, minimal techno. It's an acquired taste, I would say... highly repetitive and usually lacking any sort of melodic sensibility. i would agree with the generalization that it's the "best techno available" considering that they've released several top notch releases by Cristian Vogel, Surgeon, Subhead, Dave Tarrida, DJ Shufflemaster, Fumiya Tanaka... not to mention classics from Jeff Mills, Joey Beltram, etc..... I stumbled onto this stuff a little late in the game, but I never seem to tire of what is perhaps a rather formulaic sound. It just always seems to sound good on most of the Tresor releases I've heard. They've also put out some non-bangin stuff by Drexciya; I know there have been several threads about their new one, but I think it's solid as is "Neptune's Lair," its predecessor for the label. (On a side note, I wouldn't necessarily dismiss the harder, more repetitive Tresor stuff as unintelligent, although that may not have been your intent in the original post.) I had assumed that Vogel left Tresor because his music had gotten considerably stranger than their usual releases (although Subhead and Tarrida are doing comparable things to his "Buscas Invisibles" release I think), and he was dabbling in more leftfield stuff. I also assumed that Mute offered him much better distribution and more potential to crossover with different audiences, since Tresor is so heavily associated with the banging techno sound. I haven't heard much of his Mille Plateaux material although what I have heard has paled to his Tresor and Mute releases... he's definitely progressed in the last several years. "Buscas" and "Rescate137" are both really great albums, as is the Super_Collider release on Loaded ("Head On"). I have heard that a new Super_Collider release is expected to drop in May or thereabouts... fingers crossed, I can't wait! Tresor is releasing a 3CD retrospective compilation in March which looks to be pretty interesting... I missed most of these releases when they originally came out so it will be great to have selections from the backcatalogue on one extensive compilation rather than trying to track all of it down for outrageous prices. i like the stuff, but not THAT much ;-) _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
