Recently I've become obsessed with some crazy idea of sample-based chopped up music at a house type tempo. I guess I'm imagining something like 2-step but not necessarily so fast or covered in soulless, melodramatic r&b vocals. <ahem> Harsh calls aside, can anyone suggest what I could check out? Disco references, slap bass, etc. all fine by me, just so long as it's jerky and physical, rather than smoothed out. Maybe all I'm thinking of is the more dancey end of "West London"/"broken beat" or whatever you call that loose genre. A good example of what I'm thinking of is the first few minutes of 'Funk Apocalypse' by Ian O'Brien, on the People records comp 'People Make the World Go Round', before it goes all synth strings and noodly piano. Not that I don't have enough stuff to consider buying when I have some cash... :-/ but I just have to ask. I would suggest the obvious German Hardwax label-derivatives: - Soundhack 1 & 2 - Soundstream - MMM But some of this material might be too electro at times. MMM's rendition of Donna Summer classics is very interesting. Soundstream is more on the smooth side. Then you would probably like S.I. Futures (which is really Si Begg). I believe he has 3 releases under that name: - The Mission Statement CD - We are not a rock band EP - Freestyle Disco EP Can't remember the label right now. Excellent Buckfunk 3000-style cut up house/disco/good taste 2-step with a bunch of effects dropped over the tracks like only Si Begg can do. Jolly Bar by Jolly Music is also interesting. They are two guys from Italy, on Nature Records or Balance Records, can't remember either. The tracks are made from old french/italian releases from the 60's, disco bass lines, etc. Hope this helps, poussinfrais

I can also tell you that Errorsmith is responsible for most of this material. He has a really great new album out called "tribute" under the updated moniker of Smith-n-hack. Am very unsure of it's distribution routes though... i would give it my very highest recommendation as he's sucessfully made a disco album that is as experimental as it is rump shaking!! Oh, and I NEVER gave permission to those rascals to use my music... I'm calling my lawyer!
