Alot of people like almost all of his stuff! I personally think "Sign O the Times" is his best stuff. He did the album almost by himself, and there's lots of interesting production effects. And besides that, He's Prince for godsakes! "Housequake" is my favorite track along with "Balad of Dorthy Parker". Then there's always "Purple Rain"... is there any other work from prince that

yeah, what's going on with Prince? this is off-topic, but given the fact that electronica is seized by an exhaustive 1980s revival, it was only a matter of time before this happened. (Well, I guess we've already had Thomas Brinkmann's cover of "1999" couple years back) yeah, Black Album has a nice Prince-meets-George Clinton feel, with some really surprising sexual material...isn't there a song about making a woman put on a wig at gunpoint? and what was that line about a "bucket of squirrel meat"?? I think he screwed his career by not releasing it and then quickly releasing the shitty "Love Sexy". And not only did he pack "Love Sexy" with self-indulgent mediocrity, the CD release had one track number for the whole album, so you couldn't skip any of the particularly lousy songs. Soon he would be the artist formerly known as Prince... Most of his albums have some good tracks and a lot of mediocre (or worse) tracks, the ones that are a bit more consistent, I'd say, are "Black Album" "Dirty Mind" "Sign o' the Times" and "Parade". But then, some of his best singles (eg "Controversy") are stuck on throwaway albums...what to do.. avoid "Graffitti Bridge" like the plague, that's what... I'm getting into Romanthony...his recent single "Never Fuck" is very Princely, with all the excitement and embarrassment that entails. Actually, if anyone has other Romanthony recommendations, I'm keen to hear them. k --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

agree on "dirty mind" (insane oldschool funkiness, and almost completely self-produced), and "sign o' the times" (just a great album), but STRONGLY disagree on the "black album" (just not very interesting - i liked lovesexy better) and "parade" (definitely his worst album ever, although it happens to contain one of his best songs ever, "kiss").

unless you mean the movie (which sucked, not surprisingly), i disagree! much of it is crap, yes, and it's definitely a little dated, but it's got some great tracks - elephants and flowers, the question of u, joy in repetition, round and round, release it... good stuff. and some of his most compositionally interesting, imho. (lots of syncopation, etc.) little-known fact: prince has more funk than is legal in the state of minnesota, which is why he had to change his name. :) -nub --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Why is this cd so impossible to find? It's not even on Warpmart. i downloaded it a month ago and love it, and would love to show my support by buying it, but I can't find it. The mp3s are at a 256 bitrate, so maybe i should just burn a cd. :~( __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo! On the great tracks from albums that suck front, his first album has 'I Wanna Be Your Lover' and 'I Feel For You', both of which are pretty great. I do reckon 'Sign of the Times' is the most consistent, even if it is stylistically all over the place. I can think of lots of songs on there that I really like without much thought... and there are few clangers. 'Ballad of Dorothy Parker' is so good. Heard a really weird chop up of it by digital house guy Maurice Fulton. Odd. Actually, that 'Hits' triple CD with the b-sides on the 3rd disc is a good way to go, I reckon. Or super-cheap second hand LPs, if you have a turntable. :) If you like what you hear, you can go back one step further to Parliament, Stevie Wonder and Sly & The Family Stone. Beyond any "rock snob" cred these artists hold, they are (some) really obvious influences of Prince's. Then go forward two steps to SuperCollider's 'Head On'. :) Michael - http://www.ampcast.com/jetjaguar --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

it happens to contain one of his best songs ever, "kiss"). no no no. tied to the embarrassing "Cherry Moon" film, it seemed to slip by without anyone noticing, but it's a generally very good album, a better realization of his psychedelic fusion than "Around the World in a Day" (which seems to have made it onto nobody's list here!). while it opens, I believe, with the unpromising "Christopher Tracy's Parade", it's got a bunch of good tracks like "Pop Life", "I Wonder You", and of course, "Kiss". At which point we can bring this back to IDM by saying check out the Capitol K version of this track on his second Plant Mu album 'Island Row'. Interesting is the best word for that album, I think. In a good way, though.
