I finally got around to re-listening to Fennesz
"Endless Summer" and Vladislav Delay "Entain" and
"Anima". Given the amount of discussion about these
people on the list, I really, really wanted to like
them. You know how it is - everybody likes A, so you
want to, too. OK, maybe that's just me, but in any
case, I just couldn't. They're too boring to me.
But I also got around to listening to Electric Company
"Exitos" (tigerbeat6) and "Slow Food" (Planet ?). I
had only given them a cursory listen before, and
discounted them as more squelchy, dissonant DSP crap,
which some people call "fuckery," but I won't because
swear words offend me.
Damn, this shit is hot! How come I didn't like it
before? Did I just not "get it"? I don't know, and I
don't care. I immediately fell in love with Electric
Company, and ran out to buy his relatively new EP on
Tigerbeat 6, "62-56". I've only listened to it once
through today, but I can honestly say I instantly love
it. The EP starts off with a little bit of droning
ambient bliss on par with Kid 606's lighter material
on Carpark & Mille Plateaux, and then slides into some
sort of mutated glitch-indie-rock-anthem.
After kickin' it with the beats and melodies for a
track or three, "62-56" disintigrates into a sparse,
swirling madness of blips and kicks, and
unfortunately, this is where my discman's batteries
ran out on the way to work. Damn rechargeables!
Needless to say, I can't wait to get back to listening
to this sucker again.
If for some reason you've only tried Kid 606 and Cex
and, based on them, decided you didn't like anything
on Tigerbeat 6, you gotta check out Electric Company.
Or, if you're like me and try everything you can get
your hands on, but still didn't like Electric Company,
try it again. Brad Laner is working magic under this
moniker.
I also revisited Leafcutter John and have fallen back
in love with his work after becoming briefly
disenchanted with Microcontact. On the one hand, I
really need to give some things some more time. On
the other hand, other things that I do give the time
just continue to do nothing for me. Hmm...
