I hardly consider Wire, Gang of Four, the Buzzcocks, The Pop Group, The Slits, the Dead Kennedys, Black Flag... and TONS of other punk rock groups to be dumb...on either a musical level or an intellectual one. There are more than enough intellectual, or at least educated, punk rock out their to disqualify your comment. Of course, if you want to listen to, say, Blink 182, you probably ARE gonna have to hit that crack pipe :D _________________________________________________________________ Join the world?s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

indeed, I have a feeling that the "punk" that's being referred to here is that of bands like green day and sum 41. I wouldn't call that punk at all. There is, of course, a huge age gap here sometimes and if you're a bit older and say that you like punk or post punk most people will think that you're lame because their frame of reference deals solely with these current power-pop-"punk" bands. I spent all of last night sitting at a bar called black and white here in nyc listening to post punk and it sure was refreshing. Souljazz's new comp "In the beginning there was rhythm" is a really good starting point to post-punk or what would be more applicable "intelligent punk" here's the track listing: 23 Skidoo: Coup Gang of Four: To Hell With Poverty The Human League: Being Boiled The Slits: In The Beginning There Was Rhythm This Heat: 24 Track Loop Throbbing Gristle: 20 Jazz Funk Greats The Pop Group: She Is Beyond Good And Evil Cabaret Voltaire: Sluggin' Fer Jesus 23 Skidoo: Vegas El Bandito ACR: Knife Slits Water (12" version) ~adesh http://www.recordcamp.com -----Original Message----- From: Mxyzptlk [mailto:jpklein@telocity.com] Sent: Monday, February 04, 2002 9:57 AM To: subverseco communications; idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] substances and music...punk's not dumb At 10:34 AM 2/4/2002, subverseco communications wrote:

actually a puff of ganja smoke once in 2 month can do you good. i mean one puff! modern stuff is like 20 times more potent in terms of THC then the stuff in the 80s, it can really blow your mind for the rest of your life as i observed happened to some:( in 97 or 98 i went to hear Sonic Youth in Hammerstein Balroom, ny city it was pathetic... sorry you know who was good till the end- Ramones Also ukrainian band "VV", Jelo Biafra liked them too. Not any more though... that kind of music degraded completely __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Great stuff seeking new owners in Yahoo! I guess I'm sort of young (23). I smoked a lot of pot in high school, despite being allergic and vomiting a lot (peer pressure... damn). I listened to electronic music (mostly random singles from Tower... Messiah, L.A. Style... that kind of stuff) and hip-hop, then cheesy industrial (the more mainstream stuff: KMFDM, Front 242, Sister Machine Gun, etc.), then heard Orbital's Brown Album, was blown away. I got into "raves" in '95 or so, entirely for the music at the time, but then got into the drugs as part of the scene, did a whole lot of acid (a few times a week) and e for 6 months or so, had a bad trip and quit all the drugs because it wasn't fun anymore. I continued going to raves sober tapering off until '99 or so. I still go out to smaller parties occasionally, but always sober. The type of music I like to dance to has changed a lot (read: I've gotten a lot pickier), so it's pretty much all Detroit and techno now, and there isn't a lot of that here (Portland, OR). Consequently I don't go out to dance much anymore. Now it's pretty much mostly IDM and "underground" hip-hop for me. I still miss the rave scene, sort of. Even sober, going out and dancing for four-six hours was a great release, but it doesn't feel the same anymore. Oh well. Life goes on. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i'm trying like hell to take what i love about slow-bpm house and hip hop and merge it with what i love about idm, but it keeps coming out sounding like futuristic elevator music :) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? i think in many ways orbital has done what i was just talking about. keep at it--i've only just begun to write stuff that i think is dance and brain-worthy (for the average dancer, not just trained ones). it's much harder than just writing experimental stuff. blake/ Clockworm http://mp3.com/clockworm ----- Original Message ----- From: "ugly and mean" <ugly_and_mean@yahoo.com> To: "Blake Irvin" <wordsounds@yahoo.com>; "No one in particular" <idm@cocksalad.com>; <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Monday, February 04, 2002 4:59 PM Subject: Re: [idm] substances and music
