since we're all plugging our favourite ae albums, i might as well put in a mention for lp5 as it's their most consistently creative and varied body of work [or 'album' as most people would say !]. it marks the introduction of the digital cut-ups which later dominate ep7 and confield, but here meld perfectly with their earlier distinctive analogue sounds. every track seems to break boundaries and open up a huge new horizon of musical possibilities; in fact i think it's not too much of an overstatement to say that practically each track could spawn a whole new idm sub-genre. it also contains one of the most majestic moments i've heard in any piece of music, halfway through rae .. i won't give anything away, except that the first time i heard it [and this isn't a metaphor - it actually happened], the sun shone through the clouds and a rainbow appeared ! on top of that there's the impossible contortions of fold4,wrap5 which have to be heard to be believed, and the sheer mania of under BOAC, which on balance is probably my all-time favourite ae track. and i still haven't mentioned drane2 .. so although it has plenty of competition, lp5 is without doubt the standout album and the one to go for. ---------- thank goodness for all of the things you are not ! thank goodness you're not something someone forgot, and left all alone in some punkerish place like a rusty tin coathanger hanging in space dr seuss, 'did i ever tell you how lucky you are ? I'm a little bit late on it but hope you allow me to put my cents in the thread as I'm the long stading fan of theirs. I have absolutely all their CDs and would like to note that from my point of view their musical progress can be divided into the following parts: 1. Early years of melody driven electronica:(Incunabula, Amber, Basscadet, Anti) with glimps of what to expect in their next phase to be heard on brilliant Amber album. 2. Harsh industrial electronica with that alien feeling behind: (Tri Repetae, Garbage, Anvil Vapre, Peel Session #1, Gescom's Keynell, Envane, Chiastic Slide) best of them imho. 2.5 A perfect mix of old industrial sounds with their future sounds of eccentric electronic chaos like yet mathematically calculated musical structures was shown on the Chichli Suite. 3. Sounds of robots trying to understand what music fro humans - the best description imho to name their next phase of experimentations with sounds, melodies, structures etc. (LP5, EP7, Peel Sessions 2, Confield) Frankly speaking I'm more fond of their 2 phase which went along lines of my imagination and perception of alien music. Yet with Confield they finally justified the way they've been pursuing and I'm again their best fan. Maybe they stand together with Freeform on my top but I'm not sure. 8) Alien __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE video emails in Yahoo! That's something of a surprise. I'm sure Richard had a good laugh at it... It strikes me that the Brit Awards are somewhat lagging behind the rest of the planet. For example, Radiohead's Kid A is nominated under best British Album. Kid A came out 2nd October 2000! Dido's No Angel has been out even longer and is still nominated. Then you have the nonsense of Atomic Kitten and Dido both being nominated as best British Newcomer, despite being nominated for exactly the same award a year ago. Pah... -- www.danbrusca.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "George Williamson" <georgewilliamson@btinternet.com> To: "IDM@hyperreal" <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Wednesday, January 16, 2002 12:37 PM Subject: [idm] Britt Awards Nominations
