Autechre, unlike Stereolab, etc, have obviously never been much of a merchandise band.. and for a good reason. They are so involved in the sound that I suppose they don't want any type of associative icons related to their music or something philosophical like that.. but you gotta admit it would rock to wear around a tri-rep-brown Autechre t-shirt, right? Now I seem to vaguely remember reading that at one time in the past they produced ONE type of tri-rep promo t-shirt. Is this true, considering the vagueness of the rumour and the unorthodox nature of it? It doesn't seem like Sean and Rob's style..since they couldn';t care any less about promotion or record sales.. but who knows.. Just wondering if anyone here could shed some light on the issue.. There are plenty of ae t-shirts and other materials out there. Sure, the ae boys themselves may not care much, but they gotta care a little, since they're always toting t-shirts around for their gigs. I picked one up on their last tour. Of course, most bands of a smaller reputation end up creating t-shirts to sell during tours, and depending on the amount and size of gigs they had during their tri-repetae era, the amount or type of shirt may be quite rare or just boring. plus, as with all more "independent" type bands, there's plenty of bootlegging. I own a t-shirt with no brand names or band names on it, that is the EXACT same color as the tri repetae album cover. I just call that my tri repetae t-shirt. It doesn't really help to advertise for the band, but then again, that's kind of what you were saying they wanted, right? Also, when I saw them live in LA there was a guy there that had an ep7 shirt that was basically just the cover printed on the back of a white t-shirt. It doesn't cost that much to get a T-shirt done with anything these days. It's probably more 'designer' if you get your own designs done. I'll be accused of being 'sad' by saying I had a FAX t-shirt done, decent cotton job n all. I don't care much for merch, AE stuff or otherwise (but I did want an Aphex logo shirt years ago), but anything that suits what I'm into is enough. If bands want to do merch, that's cool, but it's the music that needs the merit. You're a lucky guy, to be able to buy only good music ... It's more based on informed decisions rather than blindly buying every new CD out that week. I have taken risks in purchasing, but even then I have mostly been pleasantly suprised. (See below)

Yes, what each of us perceive as 'good' is merely subjective. I have bought albums which initially I thought were crap, only to spend time listening and hearing it's finer points... I don't like recommending music unless people have expressed an interest in that sort of style, and are willing to commit to listening. I usually lend a CD of something similar and if they like that, then I'll expand on the topic.
