BROWN SIERRA
"Magnetic Resonance Imaging", "Absence No 1 Volume",
"Cryptogenic
Electroencephalogram"
3 films are made with TV CCTV VCR feedback and AF
electronics to
create audio visual breakdown analogous to the type of
neural
breakdown that can be induced by watching them.
Based in London and composed of Pia Gambardella and
Paddy Collins,
Brown Sierra has developed through many stages using
electronics,
self made instruments, door bells, car horns, sound
sculptures, super
8 films, video and slide projections. Although
referencing (and
resembling) kinetic works of the 1960's and 70's,
their work engages
in an entirely contemporary way with the physicality
of sound. Paddy
and Pia also edit the magazine 'NoiseGate' , a
quarterly publication
dedicated to the exploration and exposure of the
innovative use of
sound as a functional and creative medium.

"cut-ups" and
electro acoustic sounds to simply confuse

RICHARD SANDERSON
Born Saltburn, North Yorkshire, UK 1960. Has been
involved in
experimental and improvised music since moving to
London in 1985,
after a background in rock music. Since then he has
been very active
as both a musician as a promoter, organising (with
Mike Walter)
weekly concerts in London at the Club Room for over
five years till
1999. Since 2000 he has been organising monthly
concerts at the 12
Bar Club under the title "Baggage Reclaim". He is also
a director of
The London Musicians' Collective. First came to
attention playing
toys in the trio "The Euphoria Case" with Nick Rowan
and the late
Eddie Green and in a duo with Chris Burn called "The
Toy Boys".
Joined the electronic group Ticklish in 1995 with Phil
Durrant, Kev
Hopper (Stereolab, High Llamas) and vocalist Kelsey
Michael. Kelsey
left in 1998 to form the group Minnow, which Richard
also plays in,
and was replaced by video artist Rob Flint.
As well as Ticklish, Richard recently formed the
largely acoustic
quintet "Calcite Z" to explore low key improvisation
within
structures. Calcite Z is Richard Sanderson-
organ/melodica, Ian R
Watson- trumpet, Debra Scacco- flute, Chris Cundy-
bass clarinet and
Pete Flood- Accordion. He also has a regular trio with
the American
vocalist Anna Homler and Steve Beresford, which
headlined the 2000
LMC festival at the South Bank. Since 2000 has become
increasingly
interested in composed music- writing and performing a
series of
songs. In 2001 he wrote the music for the theatre
group "Signal to
Noise"'s version of Shakespeare'sTwelfth Night.
"Domestic Investigations" is Richard's second film
after "My Stairs"
first shown at Noisegate magazine's "Atavistic
Ratchets" event at
Lewisham Arthouse. Richard's films are very lo-fi,
filmed on (non
digital) video and edited "in camera". "I use
primitive video in the
same way that I used toys in music;- As a way of
entering a "scene"
cheaply and effectively whilst simultaneously
by-passing outdated
notions of "skill" and "virtuosity"...
