So, what file sharing programs do you use to get your MP3-files in this post-Napster era? What programs would be worth trying, especially when searching IDM (or other obscure music)? I have used Audiogalaxy, but its value is decreasing; even if you can actually find the song you are looking, it is often restricted because of copyright reasons. |visa k.

I am a fan of morpheus and limewire, or for that matter any distributed gnutella host becuase they're never going to catch us if it's everyone for themselves... sorry to appear the law breaker here, but I support the music and arts industry with over $400/month in new record purchases not to mention an assortment of shows, plays, movies and so forth... a few freebies and samplers on the side doesn't seem like a big request to me. it's also my opinion that these are the strenghts of the technological revolution... mp3's sound like crapolla compared to a well pressed record or cd... so in the end if I like it I will always buy the original... our world has shrunk due to technology... we have to face that, and if the designs of the late 70's and early 80's (ie cd's) can't keep pace with todays world of 1's and 0's being splattered across the globe then I'm sorry, but you're not going to stop it. Too many people are involved with reverse engineering and they'll always win in the end... this is illegal but it's so removed that it's 'almost' victimless... Meanwhile the company giants are being hypocrits... on one end sony (etc) is producing cd's that can't be copied by a computer or ripped to mp3's... on the other hand they're producing state of the art mp3/real/wav cd players that support a host of formats... maybe the left hand should tell the right hand what it's doing? Sorry, but this is an area of the techno-revolution where I happen to hold a very strong position/opinion. cds -----Original Message----- From: visa k [mailto:v.kuoppala@pp.inet.fi] Sent: Wednesday, December 12, 2001 1:44 PM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: [idm] file sharing programs? Soulseek certainly does rock the proverbial house ...but you just *know* it won't last long... :-( Considering the geek rating of the IDM community at large, I would think gnutella clients would be the alternative of choice in the long run ... My personal fav is LimeWire. Unfortunately, I've had more success finding things with Kazaa, the couple of times I've wanted to find something odd and non-idm recently. ===== .Adam http://www.damek.org/ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Since getting into mp3 about 3 years ago the amount of records I have bought has dramatically gone up, mostly because I want the cd and covers etc and better quality. Maybe the big record companies think that people will start downloading more 'underground' and 'experimental' music becasue its free and realise they like it and not just buy from the mainstream. Certainly happened to me in that way. It ALL started with UNKLE (even if its not the *best* example) =) Ben ----- Original Message ----- From: "Conrad Seaman" <CSeaman@rpmtec.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Wednesday, December 12, 2001 6:55 PM Subject: RE: [idm] file sharing programs?

Not sure exactly what you mean by that, but, and without going into technical terms here, there are clear distinctions as to why soulseek can't really be shut down/filtered like napster/ag were. I think legally it's pretty much in the clear (although who knows with the kinds of rulings that go on in the states). I think soulseek will collapse under it's own load before it's shut down by anyone else though. :-) Cheers _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Though I'm sure you realize this Adam, I think it is worth mentioning that Nir does give people the option to make a donation. The way I see it, I have definitely saved a sizeable chunk of cash by previewing albums before buying them. It seems pretty reasonable to send the guy $20 or so as I have saved many times that amount. -c --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I've sent him money - In fact, since I get much more use out of Soulseek than I ever got out of my EMusic subscription, I'm cancelling the latter and paying the money to the former... But it's not a business, and the server is donated by enthusiastic users... Kind of like an advanced version of an underground FTP server for electronic MP3s, and I've had access to those in the past and they always disappear. There's more of a community around Soulseek, so maybe that will give it staying power, but I don't see any reason not to explore other options while supporting Soulseek. In My Humble Experience, good things like this never last, now matter how much I pay them :P ===== .Adam http://www.damek.org/ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yeah, I tend to agree. I have to admit, every time I log on and there is a problem with the server, there is this little frightened voice in the back of my head telling me the end is near. Hopefully more people will continue to donate and it will, at the very least, keep going for as long as possible. -c --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
