hi, i'm not new here, i just lurk. i wrote these: the other people place, lifestyles of the laptop cafe, warp. this is electro, mostly. even the 4/4 stuff sounds like electro. it's not bad, it's not good, it's pretty much nothing special. the album'd be much better if the beats weren't so casio-sounding and uniform throughout. if you like that 80s sound, buy this, get out the hair gel and the parachute pants, you'll probably love it. i'll come over and give you some bengay when you throw out your back trying to breakdance. brothomstates, claro, warp. this is probably my favorite warp release of the year. it's loaded with that classic warp sound. equal parts oldskool autechre, aphex twin, and plaid, all mushed together, with a few hard-edged surprises such as the 4th track, 24101999. this isn't exactly groundbreaking stuff (sort of what i look for when buying releases on warp), but is still a great listen. robot garbage trucks trying to fit under low-clearance bridges. various mixed by dj spooky, under the influence, six degrees. once upon a time, i hated dj spooky. i thought he was an over-intellectualizing poser who played ambient records because he didn't know how to beatmatch. ah what a fool i was. this latest mix of his, 'under the influence', man it's good stuff. starting out with some ambient moby ('sound') and the dub mix of FSOL's 'papua new guinea', then right into emergency broadcast network's '3:7:8'...starts off strong like that and keeps it there. there's a little bit of everything here: ambient, dub, house, downtempo, drum'n'bass, jazz, idm, hiphop, hell there's even some sonic youth on here. and it's put together impeccably. recommended. various mixed by dj food & DK, solid steel presents 'now listen!', ninja tune. another excellent mix from the ninjas. hiphop, drum'n'bass, downtempo, idm, jazz... we've got leonard nimoy reading from bradbury's 'marionettes inc', the beat's 'mirror in the bathroom' mixed with a drum'n'bass track by mask...sabu martinez, commodores, four tet, herbie hancock, art of noise..listening to this is like watching a 2 hr movie in half the time, a listening experience so rich it fills your head with an endlessly morphing stream of pictures and images and places. ('solid steel' is the name of the radio show coldcut and dj food & dk have been doing for over a decade. a bunch of shows are archived online at http://www.ammocity.com/solidsteel/ ) dntel, life is full of possibilities, plug research. this album is amazing. it is the ultimate idm vs indierock smashup. it is like dreaming in hotel rooms in space, on the moon, or deep deep in a submarine filled with huge rooms with white walls. i mean, track 9, '(this is) the dream of evan and chan', done w/ ben gibbard (of death cab for cutie), that's worth the price of the whole damn cd alone. luckily the rest of the cd is tops too: ambient, sleepy 'pillowcase', moody, walking-too-fast-in-the-dark 'fear of corners', etc etc. go get this one. and man, plug research certainly is hitting out some good albums. saftey scissors, now this one...definitely a label to keep an eye on. bogdan raczynski, my love i love, rephlex. music that sounds pretty and light and gentle and surreal, but really in the back of your mind you're waiting for it to come out and smack you in the nuts, or similar sensitive biological area if you do not have nuts. luckily it pretty much just stays nice and light and surreal. there are synth sounds and lofi breakbeat samples, and accordions and trumpets and bogdan going 'la la la' and singing. it's like if you were in berlin in the 90s when they were rebuilding the city and you were in a little hotel room with just your underwear and a keyboard or something and you had to send a love letter to your nordic girlfriend who you missed because she was far away, you would probably drink a lot of vodka and make this record instead around sunset and then send it to her in a little box lined with pink fur and white flower petals with a note that says 'sorry, i was drunk, i miss you.' -z - zach hoon zach@iamzach.com http://www.iamzach.com/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
