additionally, "playa hata" is kind of the way that mainstream, bling-bling
hip-hop defends its lack of street credibility or identity with real people.
when bad boy et al first blew up, other rappers may have been upset by the
fact that puffy was catering to the mainstream, making pop-music for white
middle class people, exploiting black culture for his own good, and just
basically skull-fucking hip-hop, but if they said these things they were
"playa hatin". this is how they stayed on top for so long without any
decent old school rappers telling them whats-what.
for the record, i think too $hort first coined "playa hata", of course, it
was the east coast that perverted it to its current meaning. west coast
hip-hop isnt about the glam or the glitz, that was an east coast thing that
came into its current vogue with biggie. technically, of course, it dates
all the way back to ice-t and slick rick though.
schmoko.

Subject: [idm] Playa Hata
From a Busta Rhythmes interview:
http://www.chartattack.com/damn/2000/05/3108.cfm
It's basically hating men who dog their women.
That's the definition of playa hata in Canada. "Playa hata" just means you
hate the way somebody else is playin' their game. That's what we define
playa hata in New York. I don't know what it is because I don't live by none
of that. I don't hate nuthin'. Y'know what I mean? I just hate you if you
hate me. You hate me, I'm gonna hate you back. Definitely. I live by that
sword.
From the street slang linguistics dictionary:
http://www.verbalassult.com/vybin/dict.asp?n=p
Playa Hata: (Play-er-hate-er)
Definition: Person who dislikes another because of their success.
Origin: Westcoast
In the context of Eno - we say he's Play Hatin' because he's belittling
accomplishments of others.
Playa Hatin' is more or less jealously. Jealous of success, fame, material
possessions, women etc.
It all stems from the westcoast Ghetto Fabulous rap scene. All the glamour
the glitz, the "ice", the flashy cars, half-clad women. Don't hate on 'em
they're just playa's!
The funny thing is we actually had this thread about a year ago.
Lotsa topics repeat themselves over time. It's almost like someone should
keep an updated IDM faq eh?
Anyhow, hope this helps....
