Fennesz's "Endless Summer" is quite good in my opinion. It varies from some
of his other work by focusing more on the source recordings of acoustic
guitar, etc.... but does so in a way that is both raw/noisy and
melodic/beautiful. Some of the newer Oval recordings (especially "Commers"),
the newer Microstoria ("Model 3, Step 2") and work by Christopher Willits
and Aeron Bergman have some similar qualities in the way that
electro-acoustic instruments are filtered and treated in an abstract way.
And while it's somewhat off the beaten path from Fennesz, I definitely must
recommend the Vert "K?ln Konzert" which has been discussed in the past, but
is still worth mention... less radical in treatments to the original upright
piano sound, but done very very well.
As I have mentioned in the past, the proper Luomo release I own
("Hypercity") didn't really live up to my expectations. But on the other
hand I find "Multila" to be the best V.Delay CD I've got. Rather than
undeveloped, I think it's developed quite thoroughly, but with a degree of
patience by which the tracks evolve very subtly and gradually. I also find
the Sistol release to be equally rewarding on this level, albeit in a
slightly different context.
I first stumbled onto Gas through the Modulation & Transformation
compilations, without any real knowledge of W.Voigt's repertoire as Studio
1, etc... and picked up the "Zauberberg" CD on Mille Plateaux (which I think
is the first one, if I'm not mistaken), which I still think is the best. I
have heard "Konigforst" and have "Pop" and while both are similar,
"Zauberberg" seems a bit moodier, darker... not as light-ambient in tone as
"Pop." However, Gas in general is one of Voigt's more successful projects to
my ears.
