Having gotten the promos and mp3s, here's my snap judgements: DRUKQS GOOD. It should be blindingly obvious by now that Aphex Twin is no longer the vanguard of Electronic Music. There are other people out there who are defining the bleeding edge. But to my ears, Drukqs really is a sort of 'best of breed' Aphex Twin endeavor. The bloody-minded banger "cock-ver10" stutters and squawks disarmingly -- and then takes a left turn into a Varese-esque interlude before going mad again. The piano interludes are quite lovely as well. They remind me a lot of the little instrumental pieces that show up on Captain Beefheart records -- reminders that beyond the sound design and clatter beats that there's a lyrical side that's purely musical ... If it doesn't do anything for you, it isn't like you don't have an embarrassment of other choices. Idle trainspotting -- 'assois' sounds like bjork talking, and then the following track 'hy a scullyas lyf a dhagrow' sounds a lot like bjork's music box track on Vespertine .... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Here's my take on Drukqs: A majority of the tracks can be described by the following equation where: E = Early 90's Aphex synth sounds and melodies. L = Late 90's Aphex drum/percussion programing. M = Mid 90's Aphex drum/percussion samples. P = Pianoy tidbits and assorted Max/MSP diddies (E + (3/4)M)*L -------------- 2P ...please make fun of me. i've only got bits and pieces of it, but i have to say that without a doubt, my favorite track right now (from everyone and everything i've heard, not just off of drukqs), has to be vordhosbn. comes on strong, doesn't disappoint for a second. it's such a multifaceted track in my opinion. i've played it for a lot of purists...from people who listen to exclusively dnb, or house, or industrial, or rhythmic noise, you name it,...and everyone digs on that track. the whole album may come up a bit short on sound innovation, but fucken hell, that's some class-A material right there. idm ambassador to small northwest indiana towns, :mz // anonbox · http://posthoc.org/ | http://ecesis.org/ 'if there were two of you, which one would win?' --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

amen to that man.....that's the thing that I appreciated about this new album as well. It's an album that everyone enjoys, even people who don't know what IDM is.....I've played it for some of my friends who really don't know anything about the IDM scene or even the electronic music scene in general, and they have still found songs they love to listen to, and affirm my belief that the stuff on his new album is just as much what aphex is about as any other album. ----- Original Message ----- From: ":m. zero" <mzero@ecesis.org> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Wednesday, October 03, 2001 11:51 AM Subject: Re: [idm] drukqs impressions
