things i downloaded from soulseek that i thought i would be impressed with and was: 1) aphex - drukqs (not ground-breaking, but solid and mature) 2) bjork - vespertine (understated in a good way) 3) mr projectile - pug times (glitchy melodic stuff) 4) hermann + klein - transalpin ep (i will buy anything these guys release for the rest of my life) 5) telefon tel aviv - farenheit fair enough (not totally sure about this one yet, but it's growing on me - sounds like tortoise meets gimmik without the distortion pedals) things i downloaded from soulseek that i thought i would be impressed with and wasn't: 1) other people place (zzzzzz...) 2) twerk - now i'm rendered useless (like if mouse on mars wasn't good) things i *think* i would like if i could find more than one track: 1) zorn - the city's collapsing but not tonight things that are old, but new to me, and good: 1) cylob - cylobian sunset (has the term "re-lec-tro" been coined yet?) 2) speedy j - g spot (but not as awe-inspiring as ginger) best band on earth: 1) phish (they're even - get this - sorta idm at times if you'd open your ears) mind-boggling thought for the day: 1) kelly's posts are about 3000% more relevant than posts *bitching* about kelly's posts. doused in lighter fluid, nub --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

You know, I downloaded this from soulseek as well. Then I took a look at the album at Amazon, and noticed the track titles were all different. Then I decided to try the RealAudio samples at Amazon, and found that the music was also different. So then I bought the CD, and found that the real thing was much better than what I had downloaded from soulseek. I haven't actually compared them explicitly to find out if the music is completely different or if the tracks are just mistitled and in the wrong order, but I just thought anyone who got Vespertine from Soulseek might want to know, and maybe check what they got versus the samples at Amazon... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yea... I downloaded it on soulseek a ways back sometime around May or something and I remember it being marked as something like a "rough promo" or being warned by someone about that. I recall the mix sounded really rough and weird in places so after a listen or two, I just trashed the thing and figured I'd try again after the official release. So maybe thats still the same thing floating around on soulseek. Still haven't picked it up at the store or tried to redownload. I guess I should do that soon. -Aaron ----- Original Message ----- From: Adam Piontek <apiontek@yahoo.com> Date: Friday, September 28, 2001 1:22 pm Subject: [idm] bjork vespertine on soulseek (was Re: lists)

Man you guys. I had the exact same experience. I was stoked to get Vespertine months before the release date but was not impressed with it at all. Disappointed actually. I only listened to it a few times. When it got a full release in the shops I picked it up and it sounded much different than the Soulseek version. I was quite surprised. So can anything be learned from this? Like free music doesn't stop people from buying it in the shops? How many of you are *not* going to buy Drukqs because you already got it on Soulseek? Same thing with Confield - did you buy the full release after you'd already had it on MP3 for a few months? I certainly did. NOT to bring up this age old debate but damn, I'm so sick of the lackluster quality of 128k MP3's No high-end, no bottom. These things sound like shit on a good stereo. Mr. Knowles replied to me that there are at least two versions of Vespertine on Soulseek, a rough promo version, which appeared some time ago, and the Japan version, which does apparently have some different track titles or something. I don't know, but he called the situation confusing, and I agree.

Um, actually, I'm on a pretty tight budget lately, and I'm not buying a lot of music that I manage to find on Soulseek. I prioritize based on what I really really really want to have. I wasn't gonna buy Vespertine until I realized that what I had wasn't the real thing. There are a few things I've downloaded from Soulseek that I'm just not going to buy, that I might have normally. On the other hand, there are occasionally things that I normally wouldn't have bought, but upon hearing the MP3s, I simply must have. Although on my budget right now, that's amended to be "I simply must have them ... some day..." And of course there're always those things that I think will be great, but I download and quickly become glad that I didn't spend money on them!

Definitely. That's why I encode everything with Lame using the VBR setting endorsed by www.r3mix.net ... not that I'm an audiophile; I'm sure it still doesn't sound as good as real CDs, but it sounds good enough to me. -adam __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
