Saw him opening for Fantomas in Denver the other night... he made a beautiful mess of noise (seemed to confuse the hell out of some of the audience), and had the most stereotypically idm staging I've ever seen-- that is to say, none whatsoever. Guy at a desk with a laptop. Click click click. I enjoyed it anyway, but I'm pretty sure the guy next to me screaming "you suck!" at the top of his voice didn't. Oh well, can't please everybody. Maybe if he had some dancing bears or something... BTW, Fantomas is not IDM-- tho maybe the IDM of super-heavy art-metal-- but if you see them coming to your town, I highly recommend going to see this band. Take earplugs. I think I talked about this like two weeks ago (you can check the archives), but Atomsmasher is James Plotkin (guitar player from Scorn) and his pals Speedranch (that crazy fucker from that split with Venetian Snares) and that guy who played drums for Discordance Axis. I got the latest album that is on Hyrdrahead and I like it a lot. If you've got those friends who like metal/hardcore/punk and always whine when you put on IDM (I sure do!), get this album and you can both be happy! The next Atomsmasher album is supposed to be coming out on Ipecac. By the way... how is the current Fantomas live show? I don't get to see them because they are opening for big bad tool here on the east coast and tickets sold out the first hour or something. -Aaron "fucking" Meyers ----- Original Message ----- From: Lander <gamera_@yahoo.com> Date: Saturday, September 15, 2001 6:01 pm Subject: [idm] who is atomsmasher?

I didn't know Plotkin played with Scorn. Do you know what album he was on? You can also check out Plotkin's stuff as OLD and Flux. I like 'Lo Flux Tube' and 'Formula' by OLD. Formula most of all, is kind of a hypnotic, melodic album that reminds me of 70s progressive rock for some reason. I need to find some of this Atomsmasher.. __________________________________________________ Terrorist Attacks on U.S. - How can you help? Actually when I saw him, it was just the one guy. Atomsmasher wasn't the original opener (chicks on speed was) so maybe it was just a last-minute thing (which would explain the guy-walks-in-off-the-street-to-fool-with-his-laptop look). The Fantomas live show was in-fucking-credible. The most energy I've ever seen from any performance of any kind ever. The only Fantomas album I have is the new one-- Director's Cut-- so I don't know how it compares to their others, but the live show is TOTALLY different, structurally, from anything you might expect from listening to that, or a Mr Bungle album, or even a SC3 album. I can only describe it as a 4-man atonal heavy-metal chamber music ensemble. They hardly stopped playing at all... no intermission, just percussion bridges between most of the songs. Half the time Mike was actually conducting them from behind a wall of electronics and microphones on one side of the stage, which I didn't expect. By the way, just for the record, Mike Patton is totally off his rocker (lucky for us!). Z --- Aaron D Meyers <adm226@nyu.edu> wrote:
