What to play while boats are shuttling the remains of the doomed thousands across the Hudson? A somber, static cloud of sound by Jon Gibson struck the right tone at Other Music yesterday... Exhausted and depressed from recent events, I was ready for something a little more cathartic. I don't know how long this has been out, but I picked up T. Raumschmiere "Zartbitter EP" on Shitkatapult. I'd first became aware of him with his recent Kompakt EP which I liked quite a bit. This "Zartbitter" ep is also quite good. The funereal, droning, minor thirds on the title track, coupled with middle eastern touches gave the record an unexpected timliness. Even stranger, there are a lot of sounds quite reminiscent of jet aircraft passing overhead. As I made dinner and listened to the record, the sky was in fact swarming with loud jet fighters; George Bush was in town making his appearance at the WTC site. A disconcerting, if striking, live remix... Overall, compared to T. Raumschmiere's Kompakt release, it seemed more like the classic Shitkatapult sound: abraded, psychedelic. I see Marco Haas (a/k/a T. Raumschmiere) is one of the partners running Shitkatapult, and i realize I've been unwittingly enjoying his tracks on the Cozmic Suckerz comps... The Shitkatapult trip is cool. As with Kompakt (with whom they seem to have some affiliation), there's a certain pop techno pleasure to it all, and a sense of humor lurking. But there's more of a sardonic edge to it, less stylistic consistency, and, at times, more grit and darkness. k ps. trivia: found this 12" house comp in a used bin at Tower yesterday: http://www.bway.net/~supine/record --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
