from what i've heard of it (about half at least) i enjoy it quite a bit. it is nothing revolutionary or even very new sounding. i quite like the prepared piano-sounding clips that are interspersed amongst the more electronic tracks. parts of it are quite nice although he seems to have fallen back on conventional acid/drill-n-bass stuff (similar at times to chaos AD, to my ears anyway). I don't have a copy personally but heard it through mp3s at work one afternoon from a coworker, so this is all on a first impression. I didn't much care for the preview track on the warp site, but the rest of it was good enough for passive listening.... just don't expect something new that's going to blow you away. there's a lot better out there in that vein.

i've been personally more interested by a lot of the sounds surfacing from the Schematic label lately, or possibly Phthalo or Planet ?. I.e., Phthalocyanine, Richard Devine, Otto von Schirach... I would say they're all influenced by RDJ probably (although I can't speak for them) but they seem to be taking it somewhere more interesting than the new afx.... although I did really like those more abstract piano/ambient pieces that I heard. I'll probably still pick it up just to hear it all, before making a total judgment. (I would also mention Jamie Lidell's "Muddlin Gear" which blew me away when I put it on for the first time....)

Everything being released now seems to be very forgetable, nothing is really striking chords for me. Most artists who were dependable as mainstays of the IDM sound are releasing uninnovative stuff, that really doesn't drive me to relisten to it. I want a record that simply demands that I listen to it repeatedly for hours This probably due to the freedom given by current computer technology, with no rules and no constraints to their sound. I am hoping that soon I will get something that defies this current trend, a breath of fresh air that doesn't simply sound like something autechre could have put out in '95. Too much influence, not enough thought. georgewilliamson np. fridge - sevens and twelves

Seems like most times ppl don't like my opions on new releases, to critical (read:negitive). but i'll give my 3 weeks after listening to it review/ summary.. ok, first off, this is by far his (aphex's) least innovative release since 'i care..' and no this does'nt have to make it a bad release, just a bit of a let down. 60% beat tracks 30% piano tracks (prepared and non also) 10% strange found sound/sound pieces, organ and harmonium bits. while the prepared bits are nice to listen to the others (straight piano) i just find boring (i like feldman myself) and both tend to break the flow of the album (my biggest complaint) as they tend to be inbetween every beat track.. sorta like my parenthasies=) the beat tracks are (as a rule) are frantic squarepusher esq' with some new percussion sounds i hav'nt heard from him (afx) before and some (love it!) 808 kit amonst others. but nothing even close to being as colorfull as the rdj lp (a pinacle in his career imo). switch kit hits ala' max tundra in some parts too. orban eq trx4 and bbydhyonchord are my faves by far.. gwarek2 is quite creepy and in the vein of perc#6 minus the bongos. call me scent-a-mental, the piano fucking kills it. gakfunk! -=k=- nr - j/g ballard's 'super cannes - a novel' np - air conditioner hum On Mon, 17 Sep 2001 00:03:51 -0700 Mark <mef@ecst.csuchico.edu> writes:
