I saw I am Spoonbender in San Francisco with Kid606 and another time cant remember with whom, maybe Trans Am, also in SF. Not impressed whatsoever, in fact would discourage from seeing them live. Way too pretentious, such boring music, that I almost fell asleep on my feet. Not that they werent talented, just lacking any heart, seemed like one of those art school outings where everyone pretends that they are hearing something deep while in fact they are bored shitless. It seemed like the show was less about music and more about stardom. The band was making the I-dont-give-a-shit-cause-I-am-such-a-cool-rock-star faces the whole time. I couldnt figure out if they were serious or joking. Sorry for such strong judgements, I am just annoyed at how much publicity they are getting. They were all over the frickin newspapers in SF.

Yea... valid points Julia. I guess not everyone is going to like them and I see what you mean about certain aspects of their show. The reason they get so much hype in SF is because they are locals. No one really pays any attention to them anywhere else, so they at least deserve the support of their hometown. Yes. They might come off as pretentious, but I don't think they are taking themselves entirely seriously. If I was in a band that wore spacesuit-like uniforms, had as many light and fog machines as they do and sang songs through telephones, I'd want someone to give me two kicks in the ass if I didn't have a sense of humor about it. I think the whole artsy-fartsy thing is just part of their aesthetic. Is that anything new to San Francisco though? ;) Also, did you not notice how "into it" their drummer is? That guy has more energy and enthusiasm than just about every idm laptop performer i've ever seen put together. As the ex-drummer of Pansy Division, I don't think he has too much room to take himself too seriously. Anyway... sorry for the rant. I'm done now. Maybe you shouldn't go check out I am Spoonbender. Maybe you should. -Aaron ----- Original Message ----- From: "Julia Matusov" <ulia5@hotmail.com> Date: Wednesday, September 5, 2001 1:39 pm Subject: Re: [idm] I am Spoonbender

Well, since I was the one writing the original statement, I shall respond... Yes, you are right, it is a matter of perception. The reason why I mentioned it though and why I am so annoyed by this band is that it follows the Emperor Wears no Clothes Phenomenon. It's getting so much publicity in San Francisco, so many articles, they open for like every frickin' band, their name is buzzing around all over the place, that the fact that their music is empty is getting completely ignored. And because people hear the name so much, psychologically they think that there is something there for them to like, hence they dont notice that the emperor is really naked. If they closed their eyes, they would realize that it aint shit (especially in comparison to some of the other music out) Once you get past their cool haircuts, the lights, the publicity, the smoke and hear the actual music, you realize that it has no depth, its shallow as hell, it basically sucks. And with my art school outings comment I was referring to this analogy: picture a bunch of art students looking at a piece of shit wrapped in a really shiny wrapper. The professor describes this piece of shit while the students are taking notes, like look at the depth and the significance of this piece of shit to the social status of blah, blah, blah, blah. Look at the folds and the texture, look at the statement the artist makes. The students all think, wow, yes, yes, yes. anyways...

So now that you've all heard Julia's view on I am Spoonbender which is possibly as low as they come, go to allmusic.com and read the blurbs on them there. Someone there apparently has the hugest boner in the world for the band. Even I couldn't gush about the band like that. -Aaron ----- Original Message ----- From: "Julia Matusov" <ulia5@hotmail.com> Date: Thursday, September 6, 2001 1:59 pm Subject: Re: [idm] I am Spoonbender

Hi, I couldn¹t agree more with Julia. The irony is that I used to be in that band (was even a co-founder, back in Œ96). I quit a year ago May for the reasons she described ‹i.e., they were not joking. But I do want to say thanks to Aaron for the props on the Berlin cover we did 2 years ago. I did the sequencing and drum programming, as well as the editing and tracking. For those of you in San Francisco, I¹ve been co-promoting a monthly called SYNTH and have a new project in the works. The monthly is sponsored by XLR8R magazine, and have had people like Mr. Velcro Fastener, Kid 606, Lusine Icl, Lexaunculpt, Scanner, Languis, Sutekh, Lesser, Blechdom from Blechdon, Gold Chains, Plastiq Phantom, and more, play the event. The new music project is called Memory Systems and has a track on an upcoming Simball Recs compilation, plus a full length LP in the works -- with none of the ³I-dont-give-a-shit-cause -I-am-such-a-cool-rock-star ³ attitude and all of the DSP chops that was part of that band. Thanks! Brian memory systems / SYNTH www.form8.com
