ok. so its 5am sunday morning. im all juiced up on caffine and just kinda thinking to myself as im flipping through countles commercials and television shows when i come up with a string of thoughts, wich i suppose have some sort of relevance to this list. im sitting, thinking about media, and how it applies to a person. im thinking about, why it is that so many of us are attracted to what we are. what is it that makes a person decide that they are going to like motzart, or jessica simpson? why do all of us like quarky, electronic, patterns and rythmns? why is it that some people would rather watch the weather channel all night, than watch the world cup? why is it, that instead of subscribing to a newsgroup focused on sepeltura or travis tritt, we choose to read about chris clark and lexaunculpt (who i would love to hear more from ;) i guess you could even break it down to questions like, why do some people like tomatos and liver, when others cant stand the taste of either. i guess im just sort of interested in why we are who we are. is it because of early childhood influences? or is it a striving to be diffrent, or more the same? more than anything, i guess the question im asking is....why is david hastlehoff so damn popular outside of the usa? didnt those people get their memo? maybe im spending too much time watching crap on tv and sucking down sugar loaded beverages, rather than taking the time to let my body rest but im sure some of you have asked yourself similar questions. i can say i listen to idm related music because "it just sounds cooler" or i can say "because the music triggers interests in obscure forms of music for me" but does that really give me an accurate reason as to why i enjoy listening to this type of music more than others? nope it doesnt.. and to be completely honest i dont expect any of you to know the answers if there are any anyway. but i am curious in knowing what you all think about it as well. i appreciate you reading through my garble and would love to hear what you think, but lemme remind you. if you must be an asshole, try not to aim that thing at me. i didnt force you to read this. mike p.s.- sorry about all the spelling and gramerical errors. i was too lazy to click the spell checker. ____________________________________________________________ ------------{<<<<www.8bitpeoples.com>>>>}------------ ____________________________________________________________ we are still here.we are still robots.we are still 8bit _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

alright, so it's 1 am i worked 10 hours today and i have to be at work at 7 am - yeah i'm feeling philosophical. i listen to IDM because these artists (at least the one's i dig) understand that beauty lies in melancholy i listen to IDM because it captures the feeling of standing on a windswept hill at 6am watching the sunrise over the ocean i listen to IDM because nobody else does i listen to IDM because when i actually meet someone who's into it (outside of cyberspace), it's like we have some dirty little secret that only we share. i listen to IDM because it's the only thing, musically speaking, that is still innovative and interesting to my ears i listen to IDM because, unlike alot of other electronic music, i will still be listening to these records in twenty years i listen to IDM because i love analog snyths i listen to IDM because i love DSP wankery i listen to IDM because it's international. communism died and russian music exploded (at least for those of us paying attention) - what's cooler than that? i listen to IDM because otherwise i wouldn't be subscribed to some madcap list made up of mad crazy music fanatics. you all are worse than me, and i didn't think that was possible! i listen to IDM because i can play with it. yes, i will always prefer vinyl to cd. i listen to IDM because it is elitst and populist all at the same time. IDM is the success of the bedroom producer. press a key, do you like that sound? press it again. then press a record. but at the same time, are you IDM enough???? i listen to IDM because i get up in the morning for music and nothing else even comes close i listen to IDM because of BoC, i s a n, Freescha, lackluster, +one, arovane, phonem, plaid, autechre, aphex, gas, global communication, the orb, hermann & kleine, novel23, prefuse73, future3, (number theories anyone?), b. fleischman, e*vax, casino v. japan, geiom, sense, pub, lali puna, opiate, dub tractor, irresistable force, solvent, aspen, boulderdash, unagai patrol, datathief, jet jaguar, markant, pbxo, zorn, metamatics, push button objects, ko-wreck technique, funkstorung, tim tetlow, pole, monolake, phonecia, squarepusher, mikael romaneneko, mum, styrofoam, to rococo rot, while, bola, technicolor, single cell orchestra, marumari, crunch, four tet, we, flowchart, lexaunculpt, pilote, luke vibert, just to name a few... i listen to IDM because i couldn't imagine listening to anything else ok so maybe i wasn't exactly feeling philosophical. sappy might be a better word... :-) you all are great. keep up the utter insanity that is the IDM list. - d np: lackluster - container ----- Original Message ----- From: Dr. Robot <thatweirdkid@hotmail.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Sunday, August 19, 2001 5:40 AM Subject: [idm] why idm? A few quick reasons why I'm drawn to IDM... - It's more texturally interesting and has more complex arrangements than most music I hear. - Many of the most original (to me) IDM artists, i.e. Autechre, Aphex, BOC, are completely off in their own musical worlds. - Quite a bit of IDM has a distinctly psychedelic edge to it. Speaking of which, if anyone has some recommendations for some good, lesser-known psychedelically-styled whatnot, I'd love to hear 'em... I'm drawn to stuff that has an unsettling, floaty, dreamy sort of a feel (nicely flowing warped tunes, etc.) so any ideas along those lines would probably float the boat most nicely. - jake --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

alice coltrane makes lovely floaty spiritual and, i say hesitantly, psychedelic jazz inflected stuff with her harp and usually with pharoah saunders' own quixotic sax musings. gregory
