This is a public query to the list admin or anyone else that may be in the know-- I'm on the idm digest, but keep receiving multiple separate messages from various IDM labels, promoters, etc., sometimes for local events that aren't in any way local to me. Are the addresses of IDM-list recipients being given to presumed friendly parties? I, personally, would rather they weren't if this is the case. It's not a huge complaint, but recently I seem to be getting a message from a new source just about every other day, and I'm tired of unsubscribing. If I've somehow ended up on a different address registry (I'm not sure how, since I use this address almost exclusively for the IDM list and some personal mail), then all apologies. I've just never had to use a filter for this address, and I'd hate to have to bother now. Wow. I was *just* about to ask the same question! I was worried about getting flamed though ;-) Recently I've been getting tons of music-related spam sent to the email address I use for the IDM List and email address I use for the Ambient List. Specifically with regards to the Ambient List I *know* the spam is originating from there because it is the *only* place I use that address. Thankfully they all provide unsubscribe options but still, I've really been getting a lot of junk mail for labels, releases, parties and promotion that isn't even remotely Ambient or IDM related. Mind you, I do get a lot of junk from these sorts of places because of my StaticBeats website but still, precise@staticbeats.com is only used for the Ambient List so the junk mail is definitely originating from there. Thanks for bringing this up. I doubt anyone is actively giving out email addresses; rather, occam's razor suggests that these people who are sending out junk mail noticed that a lot of people who might be interested in their music communicate on these lists, and then just trolled the lists for email addresses. All you'd really need to do is download a few months' worth of the archive, and then use one of those email-addy skimming programs through the file. It'd pick up tons of email addresses for everyone who participates on the list. However, if you subscribe to the list with a separate address, and never post with that address, so there is no where on the net that that address actually appears, visible to the public (like an archive), then if you get junk mail at that address, it's probably safe to assume that someone with access to the subscribed addresses gave them out... -Adam --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
