So, I've been reading up at vorbis.com and a little at that slashdot thread that was posted here earlier, and I've come to two conclusions: A) it doesn't matter if the Vorbis audio format never catches on like MP3 did, or replaces MP3 - as long as players like WinAmp can play both, I can have both (downloaded MP3s, and my own self-encoded, better quality .OGG files. I've tried comparing a couple of my own WAVs encoded as both MP3 and OGG, and OGG *definitely* sounds better, and I don't even have "audiophile" ears (can't generally tell MP3s from CDs - dummy me :p So, the gist of A) is, I'm ready to start using Ogg Vorbis, and even willing to re-rip and encode my CD collection into the Ogg format. However: B) A major obstacle exists to my using the Ogg Vorbis format, and that is this: having a large audio file collection necessitates the use of some sort of audio file management software. At the very least (and I am a minimalist), a program to read the audio files and their comment tags (ID3 or the equivalent) off of my CDs and index the files and their comment tags, and allow me to search the resulting base of data for artist, title, etc. I like that Ogg comments are more flexible - I can add "label" and "catalogue number" comments, or whatever I want - but for right now, there are no good tools (other than a windows vorbis extension to the shell) for managing these files, and that's the only thing keeping my lazy ass from being a full-fledged Ogg supporter. Anyone out there who can program want to write some such software for me? :) -^dam __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
