Pardon me list members, Now I have got this complaint before.... If I use Chap, Bloke, mate.....dodgy or whatever... SO WHAT.......I hear every American and his/her in-laws trying, real hard, to use African American slang in a "cool" way, but I dont never send them a message saying, "why are using this term?"..... (besides, if you could hear yourself U'd stop trying, be like Pointek and Mr "intellectual"........) I am trying to stick with musical discussion and learn about artists that I dont have, so do me and your self a favor, .............. (need I say more)........... Phat-ups, 5000, and cheers...............:)

It is funny though when Americans try to use British slang in an American way. Eg, Hey bloke (Hey dude), incorrect. I guess it's a bit easier to go the other way though because American TV/Film is so widespread. There's more to slang than just an interchangeable word. It's a cultural expression. So if you try to use another culture's slang thinking it's a just a word then people will giggle when you mess it up. I recommend viewing lots of crappy English soaps to get the hang of the lingo (eg, Eastenders, Coronation Street, Brookside, etc). i think language should be continually evolving, remixed by whoever chooses to say whatever, there are many ways to appropriate many words in new contexts that still manage to convey their meanings, and using words in new ways may often manage to imbue a phrase with an more effective descriptive purpose. if i were just slightly more daft i'd suggest that e.e. cummings had the dopest flow of the first half of the 20th century. if humans ought not be segregated, then why should words be? gregory, characteristically nonplussed (and unfinished with) about: http://jeanpaulasthma.com --- Ben Kirkley <ben.kirkley@displaypost.co.uk> wrote:

quoted 1 line if humans ought not be segregated, then why should>>if humans ought not be segregated, then why should
words be? Perhaps because Mr. Kirkley and others dont hold the same sentiments as you and I. (I am gonna turn this into a musically related issue--watch)........ They typically think that there needs to be concise, neat, clearly identifiable things in the world that they can explain, makes em look intelligent like, like, like Mr. Pointek. Same goes for the music, my buddy tells me, and I remember as well that when techno first hit, it was mixed in with rap music and the likes.....Imagine if you will, Grand Master Flash being mixed with Tour De France........yawzers!..... Nonetheless, there was no techno or house scene, it was all one scene, and now, now its segregated.......Just like our words should be...... (so if your Italian dont you dare speak German, why that's barbaric............Sarcasm heavily emphasized) ----- Original Message ----- From: jean paul l'asthme Sent: Thursday, August 09, 2001 6:53 PM To: idm@hyperreal.org Cc: ben.kirkley@displaypost.co.uk Subject: [idm] On Topic----Lingo i think language should be continually evolving, remixed by whoever chooses to say whatever, there are many ways to appropriate many words in new contexts that still manage to convey their meanings, and using words in new ways may often manage to imbue a phrase with an more effective descriptive purpose. if i were just slightly more daft i'd suggest that e.e. cummings had the dopest flow of the first half of the 20th century. if humans ought not be segregated, then why should words be? gregory, characteristically nonplussed (and unfinished with) about: http://jeanpaulasthma.com --- Ben Kirkley <ben.kirkley@displaypost.co.uk> wrote:
