Can't answer to the 'general consensus' part of this, only answering for myself - and I'd have to say that honestly I prefer Geir Jenssen's early output. Patashnik & Microgravity might be referred to as dated by some, but for beautiful ambience, they always hit the spot. Also, one of the most beautiful tracks EVER ends off Patashnik "En Trance" - it's worth seeking out. I havnt gotten into microgravity really. its nothing really stunning in the way substrata is, its quite formulaic and generic whereas substrata was most definitely not either of those. on the other hand i got cirque a couple of months ago (post-substrata) and wasnt blown away as much as by substrata but it is still a v good album, a return to beats in some places but more subtle and less clunking than microgravity. -thomas ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The first two Bisphere albums are still my favorite material by him. The first album "Microgravity" is nothing short of a techno/ambient classic. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Microgravity is "generic"? Whoa there. That's probably the last term I would use to describe it. It's a very finely crafted piece of work and is overflowing with gorgeous melodies. It is much more techno based and if you don't like beats maybe you can't get into it but that doesn't make it generic. I've heard generic techno and Microgravity is not it. Microgravity is a reference disc for the "ambient/techno" genre IMO. Patashnik is in a similar vein and is really good too but from start to finish it's not quite on par with Microgravity. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

A short overview and some excerpted opinions of Microgravity for those thinking of checking out Geir's earlier work. "In the autumn of 1991 Geir's second solo-album Microgravity appeared on the Norwegian label Origo Sound, under the banner Biosphere. The album came to the attention of R & S Records in Gent, who licensed it for worldwide release on their then newly-founded ambient division Apollo. Hailed by many as a trance dance revelation, Microgravity consisted of an intriguing combination of found noises, atmospheric layers of sound and trance patterns with hi-tech dance beats, meandering elegantly through the borderland between ambient enchantment and rhythmical hypnosis. An official U.K. release in late 1992 stretched the attention span for Microgravity, but it was on the European continent that the record was first appreciated, with many reviews stressing the timelessness of the album. Here's a selection: "Microgravity can probably be associated with names like Brian Eno and Stanley Kubrick, but the album places itself beyond time, tradition and fashion. A sonic space odyssey and a science fiction dream in colours..." (Puls, Norway) "Forget The Orb. This is lightyears better. Chill-out trip of the year." (Oor, Holland) "A brilliant album, high in orbit, weightless beyond the clouds, soundscaping of the highest order." (Independent Catalogue, U.K.) "Gliding, percolating electronic epics from the world of ambience." (i-D, U.K.) "The dog's nuts of ambient dance music from Norwegian maestro Geir Jenssen, of such quality that others pale to insignificance." (Ride, U.K.)" --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
