Whatever this new Bogdan Raczynski EP is actually titled, and however you pronounce it, I just don't really give a damn. He can make all the emo-core polish folk music he wants, but it's still just polish folk music. I respect an artist for trying to do something different, for putting effort into challenging himself. If this is what he likes, then so be it. If you love his first two albums on Rephlex, and don't normally buy eastern-euro inspired minimal accordian melodies, you probably won't like the new EP. Don't be afraid to not like his new music. Stand up and be proud to proclaim the new Bogdan sucky! Declare his best days have come and gone, it's OK! On a more technical level, while I've only taken one music class, three years ago in college, I feel I learned enough to say that the melodies in this EP are just stale. He chooses a couple of chords, brings you ploddingly from one to the next and then back again, all the while another "instrument" is fluttering around between the individual notes in the given chords. This might be a bad way to describe some of the most inspired jazz, but I don't think it misses the point on this EP, because the only point to this EP seems to be Bogdan sharing his nostalgia for a time that is now lost for him. Something to that effect. Good for him, boring for us. I really like the first track on the EP. Maybe because, with the stacatto accordian/organ sound, it's the closest to his earlier, wild, fast d'n'b escapades. I really hate the last track on the EP. Mostly because of the little "trick" of ending the song before it's over. I mean, it's just getting revved up, and then he goes and chops it off on a leading note, and while it serves its jarring purpose, it just feels amateurish. On the one hand, there's nothing wrong with a master craftsman who knows all the tricks and methods deciding to use the simpler ones for a given effect. On the other hand, Bogdan just does not strike me as a master crafstman at all. So yeah, I guess I'm just being negative again, but I just don't think this EP deserved NME's single of the week spot, not do I think I'll bother buying his next album if it's more of the same. Sad for me. -Adam __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo! This is really interesting -- I was hoping someone would bring this up. This, to me, is one of the large problems with working with trackers. If you get a note and use it to create a melody, it's going to be inherently simple, due to the way trackers pitch-shift. If you make something too complex or crazy without re-sampling, the samples sound like shit. It seems like all the trackers that have "made it big" (read: put a cd out and have a couple fans) are makin' beaty tracks or drum 'n bass. I don't really hear much variety in terms of melodies, and I can almost always spot a tracker just by the overall sound of the tracks. Granted, things like Buzz that allow some sort of synthesis help get around it, but that's not true tracking (hehe). So, on one hand, it sounds like bogdan is still doing what he does best. Unfortunately, it also sounds like he's run out of ideas. c'est la vie. down with video-game 8bit tracking! :D cheers, derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- coming to a cineplex near you --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Just a quick reply about tracking and bogdan's new EP - I don't know how he made it, but at bogdanraczynski.com, it says "...accordian, trumpet, flute and other instruments, this is Bogdan's first live-recording." This almost implies that he didn't do it with a tracker, that it's really "live". But actually it could just have been done "live" with a tracker. What do I know; not much, that's for sure :) I do know that on some of the accordian-sounding parts, it sorta sounds like you can hear the keypresses as the accordian is being played, but maybe there's just a keypress sound in the sample he was using. I would also like to report, on a related topic, that I have nothing against any folk music, polish or otherwise. My review wasn't intended to put down a genre that I'm not into; rather I was just trying to say that I didn't think Bogdan brought anything amazing or new to the world with the EP. It's a radical change for him, but in the grander scheme of things it's just blah. IMHO, of course. -Adam __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Lame as it is, I must agree - I bought it all excited thinking, "I love Bogdan's stuff, and this is limited! Yippee!" and I got accordian music. I guess it's good that he does whatever he feels like, but this record is a dud for me. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
