This recording has been mentioned on the list at least twice, but there hasn't really been any discussion of it...I can only imagine that's because it's so skull-fuckingly WIERD that nobody's figured it out enough to say anything meaningful about it? Might also be cuz it's not IDM by any stretch of the imagination, and we wouldn't want to get off topic, eh? (IDMest breakfast cereal: Grape Nuts - they're so...granular) Anyhow, after a million listens, it's just barely starting to gel, and I'd love to hear some discussion/opinions about this album, cause this shit is HOT. Sorry to drop the evil C word here, but the inaccessability -> patience -> huge reward arc with this album is a lot like Confield, and the payoff may be even more, depending on your tastes. Definatley the "grower" album of the year so far, IMO. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo! It's not particularly exemplary of what SHJ has done in the past, but they have always had jazz leanings, so this is could sort of be considered an extreme of that. The mix of horn and string sounds back on the "Million Shades" album had a noir kinda feel at times. Given how "out" this album is, it may be of more interest to fans of the sampled material -- the avant-garde jazz of Evan Parker, Tim Berne and so forth -- than to fans of Springheel Jack. Of course, if you like both, you'll be happy. Marc At 02:52 PM 7/25/01 -0500, you wrote:

I've grown to be a big fan of SHJ's 'Disappeared' and I quite enjoyed their first one (name escapes me) when it came out - can anyone give me any opinions on the ones in between? Everything they do is simply amazing. THE single group that continually puts out a new sound with each new album, and the amount of experimentation and audacity they show is staggering. It may also account for the number of labels they've been on. Buy this record on sight. Or on browser. Just buy it and be amazed. "Free Jazz" like you've never heard it, they've managed to get closer to the true spirit of jazz than any electronic band I've heard in a long time.
