I'm in Toronto, not NYC, but I can definately relate to this complaint. As
promoters of small scale electronic/experimental events, we've gotten
pretty sick of having to deal with smoky, rock-oriented venues that charge
stupid rental fees and care more about selling beer than making the
performers happy.
Thankfully, we've recently discovered a little venue called Now Lounge that
is quite different. It's clean & well-ventilated, and while they serve
alcohol, they also have tasty food (pizza, sandwiches, salads - much of it
veggie friendly), great coffee and other drinks. Plus friendly staff, a
half-decent sound system, and no money-related hassles.
We did a show with Marumari there a couple of weeks ago that went really
well, and are bringing Accelera Deck in for a show on August 22nd, with
tentative plans for more stuff in the fall. Happy happy happy. :)
