So I finally made my way over to the Planet Mu website to hear what all the fuss over Slag Boom Van Loom was about. Yes, I dig Speedy J (his recent material is hard as nails!), so I was curious. But then I stumbled across something else, an upcoming release from an artist named Dykehouse. So has anyone else listened to the Dykehouse samples on the site? I'm really digging them... it's all about warm synth sounds, mang. -djgyn, forever np: Pole- 3 ===== ======= "GASR" -(Accession recording artists)- << http://gasr.net >> << http://www.accession-records.com >> __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yeah that stuff is great. Planet Mu is a great label. Even if you don't like everything they put out, their artistic approach rules, and the web site is by far the best done label site I know of. I won't be getting the Dykehouse stuff. I'm not even keeping my copy of the Slag Boom remixes. The BoC mix was ok (not the best thing ever), and Four Tet, but basically it's hit and miss, if you ask me, and that goes for the whole label. I wish I could hear the Mum mix, but I ain't gonna buy a whole release just for the one extra track - and on VINYL no less! (*ducks*)
quoted 1 line A Rephlex for the New Milleneum? *ducks*> A Rephlex for the New Milleneum? *ducks*
I guess so, if by that you mean a hit and miss label with some classics but otherwise generally not to my taste. I'm just not into the whole noise thing like the Snares nor the hardcore shit like the Hellfish. Nor am I really into the copycat AI stuff or the wannabee nostalgic stuff. As for Rephlex, congratz for finding Bogdan, but other than that they seem to have their collective head up their ass. I respect them and all (both labels), but... -Adam PS - actually, to tell the truth, I'm not really into any noise, and the little bit I did like (or get?) is wearing thin lately. I'm not really into the simple stuff either. You know who you are, you melody peddlers who didn't deserve to leave mp3.com. yeah, Dykehouse (his real last name, ha!) put out an mp3 only release on Planet Mu called "leftovers" which were songs not put on his album. They are pretty good, and if those are indeed leftovers, his debut coming out this fall or something (not sure when, if it is out already) should be very very solid. A quiet release that may be a late discovery for some, but hopefully might make some end of the year lists. I'm looking forward to it, at the very least. -mark djgyn forever wrote:

I have the feeling that the Dykehouse album on Planet-Mu has been really overlooked and I find myself listening to it often these days. It's not the most distinctive album ever, but it's well done, with nice melodies and good arrangements. It really varies from track to track (it says the tracks were made between 1996-2001). There are touches of AFX (both early and latter period), BOC, a bit of drill'n'bass, Plaid, even some bad 80's synth-pop (the Taylor Dayne "Tell It to My Heart" type) and other things which are more difficult to pigeonhole (which I already feel a bit bad about doing). Not too much Autechre influence, though it does show up on a couple of tracks. I kind of look at it in the same way as the Chris Clark album on Warp, both because it reminds me a bit of that musically and because it's not really a particularly distinctive album, but also not derivative to the point that it becomes annoying. And it's just well done. Nice to listen to. I could not agree with you more. That album has been a mainstay of mine since July of 2001. In my opinion, it represents a near perfect synthesis of the very IDM elements that drew most of us to the genre in the first place. Andrei gave a right-on description so I won't go further. There are some tracks that absolutely kill me; "Tauq 2" is the "Alberto Basalm" for the new millenium. That album makes me so happy and pensive and sad and everything all at once- truly emotive work. It's worth anyone's time and money. --- Andrei <andrei@world.std.com> wrote:

I think quality control is generally very high at Planet-Mu. Lots of good releases. Phthalocyanine, Venetian Snares, Jega, etc. I'm pretty partial to Leafcutter John's "Microcontact". I was disappointed to hear recently that it sold poorly. It's a shame cuz I think he's doing something different and special which more people should be aware of. I find myself throwing this album on again and again myself. I look at the album like this... Many of the big name idm acts got props for taking broken down stlyes like jungle and drum and bass and making them quirky and fresh again. I think Dynamic Obsolescence takes all that back and puts the re-framed beats, synths, and whatnot back into a more dancable format. I don't think i explained that as well as i'd have liked, but hopefully you get the idea... David

I have to agree with Andrei on this one.. 'Dynamic Obsolescence' has such an array of warm grooves, both upbeat, Plaid'ish, BoC'ish and also contains some not so stellar tunes.. i've collected at least 6-8 tracks from this album that are quite beautiful, and i also think that more list-members ought to check this one on Planet Mu.
