well, this was certainly yet another wonderful evening of music courtesy
of the amoda folk and friends.
review of the music:
-USE (?).
this guy was on when i arrived early (9:45 or so?) -- and boy am i ever
glad i very much over-estimated the time it would take to bike to the
venue :). VERY good stuff, with a nice solid 4 on the floor feel
(reminded me a little of some of the sf peeps like kit clayton). anyone
have more info on this guy? or know if he has anything out?
-JACOB GREEN .
well, i was quite excited to see jacob play after hearing some of his
material one day while innocently shopping for videos (in fact, he ended
the set with the track that sparked my interest). no disappointment here
-- in fact, all in all it was an AMAZING set of layered sounds - sometimes
forming into a nice beat, but for the most part remaining on the abstract
side, but in a very coherent way (how do you describe this stuff?).
someone compared it to the mego output, though to me there seemed to be a
little of that experimental/industrial/coil type sound going on (perhaps
like the non-beat stuff on nww's rock n roll station or second pirate
session) - but i will just stop there (i tend to compare everything to
coil and nww that fits a kinf of abstract sound). let's just say the bulk
of the performance was REALLY GOOD experimental electronic music :) and
then, at the end of his set, he played what to me sounds like a field
recording of a bunch of insane folk drummming away happily... he needs to
get some stuff recorded... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
-NAUTILIS .
i don't know -- it was good, but nothing really grabbed me :) nice idm
type stuff. i did not hear all the set, but one thing that i think threw
me off a little was that the transitions between songs were quite abrupt
(often sounding like a cd tracking, though im certainly NOT saying thats
what he was doing.. just how it sounded). i think my fave moment of the
set was the mc 900 ft jesus/meat beat sounding song.. nice vocals/lyrics.
-WATER FALLS .
well, they certainly sounded like their name. good stuff to jsut chill
to.. very much appealed to the windy & carl fan in me (if you do not know
windy & carl, then just imagine a very floaty/washy ambient sound meshed
with a tad bit of shoegaze flavor.. but in the case of water falls, just a
tad :).
...did not really see/hear agent webb, as I had to step out for a bit.
review of the video projected above the music artists:
good, subtle, simple images -- including silly bits of old atari games
(the best of which was a close-up image of combat, which was too close to
tell what it was for me at first, but provided me with a curious and
strange bit of nostalgia). aside from the atari images were just nice,
abstract images.. not flashy, which was a bonus IMO! forget who did the
video though..
on some random fellow who walked in off the street:
some fellow heard what was going on inside while walking by the venue and
came in VERY curious about the music, amoda, and the overall presentation.
he asked myself and a few other folk a number of questions about what he
was hearing... i don't know, i just always think it is neat when someone
hears some of the more odd/experimental electronic music for the first
time and takes an interest.. so i think the amoda kids should take that as
a HUGE compliment.
k, back to work for me...
chris.
