Chessie is the guise of Stephen Gardner. Chessie put out several releases on the westcoast Drop Beat label in the mid 90s but since the Drop Beat label has since folded, the only new chessie release is a split 10" on the Plug Research label. Here is some more info from the Drop Beat website (http://www.dropbeat.com/core.html) Chessie is the working name for Virginia resident Stephen Gardner, a young and talented multi-instrumentalist who began his music career several years ago at the age of 16 with cult anti-rock group Lorelei. Gardner embarked upon his Chessie project in 1995, systematically filling 4-track cassette tapes with his swirling, disorienting breakbeat compositions. Samplers are not normally part of his studio arsenal - he prefers to loop his beats with the aid of reverb units and let the natural flow of the loops have a say in the ultimate structure of each tune. It is this on this organic base that Gardner adds live bass and guitar, creating a mesmerizing mixture of edgey beats, unsettling soundscapes and often improvised melodies. His ongoing studies into composition and improvisation clearly pay off in tracks that cannily blend structure with chance, the familiar and the startling. It is truly a new music - one that refers to the currently popular strands of jungle, post- rock and dub, but moves well beyond the usual facile and superficial "experiments" into a more ambitious and far deeper realm. A few chessie releases: . Chessie: approach 7" (Drop Beat) . Chessie: meet cd/lp (Drop Beat) . Chessie: signal series cd/lp (Drop Beat) . Chessie/Computer Soup split 10" (Plug Research) Chessie does a good live show too. I was lucky enough to see him play a few years ago on the Dropbeat tour with Kit Clayton and Stewart Walker. All three artists are really nice guys too. -->-Lance---- PO Box 450715 Westlake, OH 44145 United States --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

At this point Chessie is actually made up of 2 people: Stephen Gardner and Ben Bailes. Chessie performed as a duo last sunday in NY at the Knitting Factory at the "RKK 13" record release party. http://hamp.hampshire.edu/~sjgF94/main.html Andrei --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Here is my recent recoreview of the release - not my favorite chessie or plug research release... . Chessie/Computer Soup split 10" (Plug Research) This split ep is numbe five in the Plug Research split 10" series. The a-side features Chessie's contribution, entitled 'Lost Not Found,' in the form of a long track with a slow hip-hip percussion over caustic wailing guitars. About half way through and at the end there are pauses in the guitar wails for some lighter acoustic guitar. The flip side features two tracks from Soup Disk artist Computer Soup. The first track is a rather freeofrm and interesting mix of throbbing experimental ambient electronics and jazz improvizatons. The closing track is similar to the first but with more of a minimal feel - spacious drones and gurgling electronics with mixed with trumpet. This split ep is an interesting ear-bending-abstract addition to the Plug Research 10" series and probably one I wont be listening to as often as some of the other split 10" releases. Lorelei had two 7"es on Slumberland, the first of which was kind of dreary Slowdive kind of thing- the second (Asleep/Float My Bed? It's been a while since I've seen my copy, sorry) was more uptempo and pretty darn reet. Hood started out as a poor man's Flying Saucer Attack and probably changed into something else- I just couldn't bothered. Speaking of this general context, I think that Crescent continue to be puzzlingly underrated; given the current popularity of dub influence, you can't go wrong with the way they employed its structure to starkly render their loamy rock implosion (c.f. _Now_- the first two singles are equally brilliant but more anthemic).

I remember them to be a female duo, either a) his involvement was that of a guest or b) he had a far more liberal medical insurance plan than I do. -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

ok, here are some chessie news: there will be a new album by chessie entitled "overnight" it will include 9 tracks (48 min). the cd will be released on plug research, the vinyl edition (2xlp) on 2.nd rec. releasedate isn´t confirmed yet. probably sept/nov this year. the album is truly beautiful. the perfect soundtrack to travel by train at night. chessie is also planning to tour germany and belgium in september together with safety scissors and soulo. more info: http://hamp.hampshire.edu/~sjgF94/chessie.html -> chessie page http://www.plugresearch.com http://www.2-nd.com
