Personal choices would be Leafcutter John's "Microcontact" and Slag Boom Van Loom's "So Soon" remix CD...some very strong remixes on that. I think the best stuff on P-Mu (in order of my preference) are: Capitol K - Sounds of the Empire Jega - Spectrum Capitol K - Island Row Jega - Geometry Slag Boom Van Loon - Slag Boom Van Loon [but you can't order this at WarpMart right now, so nevermind] Joseph Nothing - Dummy Variations Kid Spatula - Full Sunken Breaks Slag Boom Van Loon - So Soon And that's about it for me. Horse Opera's "3 cornered room" is ok, but mostly boring. I reckon Leafcutter John's "Concourse EEP" is pretty good, as is Electric Company's "Slow Food", but neither of them are exactly up my alley (I'm getting too old). The rest (Phthalo, Venetian, Hellfish, & Leafcutter's second release) are *really* not up my alley (I'm really getting too old...). -Adam __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I'm really fond these days of Venetian Snares "Songs about my Cats." Matt, my record store IDM fanboy friend described it as 'a more chaotic Squarepusher mixed up with Ornette Coleman.' This is apt, and not just because of the free jazz saxaphone on 'Pouncelot'. Throughout there's a sense of real expressive abandon to it. The closest analog would be early Kid606 and 'Feed Me Wierd Things' Squarepusher, but he's not as arch as the former, and somehow looser (in the best sense) than the latter. What's refreshing about it too is that he really doesn't seem contaminated by the bloodyminded cynicisim that seems a big part of Squarepusher. He's not trying to take the piss out of anyone -- he's just writing tracks about his cats. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'd disagree about the sound - most of the stuff I've gotten has been pretty melodic. I'd say either "Full Sunken Breaks" by Kid Spatula, or that first Capitol K release, if you're okay with indie rock. Not that it is indie rock, but it kinda veers off in that direction for a bit, and if you're afraid of lyrics or guitars, it might be an issue. Not that they're reall overbearing or anything, but they're there. Yes, I assholishly imagine IDM kids running screaming from records with lyrics and guitars with their hands clasped firmly over their ears screaming, "Rock is so mid 90s! This needs more DSP fuckery!" I love you all. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Your loss; they're excellent albums. Besides, "Sounds of the Empire" has *no* lyrics, except maybe a word here or there (someone correct me if I'm forgetting some song on that album that has "real" lyrics - I really don't think there are any). And the second one, "Island Row," has maybe 2 songs with lyrics, and you can't even tell what they are for the most part. -Adam --- "Brian M. Cass" <kingmob@nmt.edu> wrote:

Right now I can't stop listening to Leafcutter John's "Microcontact" and Venetian Snares' "Songs About My Cats". The Leafcutter John is not even close to IDM, more of an abstract DSP thing. The Venetian Snares is somewhere between Richard Devine and Squarepusher. Really manic. They're both excellent. Definitely recent highlights for me, generally speaking. I don't think he's cynical about his own music -- he really seems to work pretty hard at it. I do think he's pretty cynical about everybody else. Not necessary a bad thing. I mean 'Red Hot Car' totally takes the piss out of the nouveau riche ostentation of the 2-step scene in the UK.

I don't think having a sense of humour and taking the piss necessarily means you're a cynic.. He also takes the piss out of drum n bass... on 'Come on my Selector' where there's a voice sample saying something like "its awroight mate, you sound like Goldie" or whatever.... Self-deprecation is not a bad trait in a musician --- Kent williams <kent@avalon.net> wrote:

The kid spatula is great if you like µ-ziq, as it does, in my opinion, sound very much like a remix album of his other stuff, and you often hear hints of melodies and beats from other tracks of his (and mr james, see that "full sunken breaks" is reminicent of "the garden of linmiri") loads of nice tunes. It also holds a feeling of a nice sort of compilation of the various sounds of planet µ, going from the nicely melodic tim tetlow style "nordy" and "another fresh style", to the frenzied hardcore hellfish sounds of "hard love" and "xxx", to the just plainly wacky sounds like "hill street blues". Lovely. Venetian snares is also very good. georgewilliamson --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
