if someone wanted to start a record label and wanted to do all the duplication in house. what equipment would you recommend and where do u find the stuff in the US? like where does one purchase a vinyl press, how much do they cost and would that be ideal for duplicating records. what equipment would i need altoghether? i already know all about printing and prepress for paper like flyers/inserts/etc so i dont need advice on that. in fact i can give advice on printing/digitalprepress/etc if you need any. i tried looking for duplication equipment with very little luck. thanks in advance for all your help! omero p.s. - if u are wondering about the 70 records i am selling, i am getting all the audio samples together and am almost done. i gave you more time to save money for that record you want. i should be done by tuesday. i will be sure to repost all the info to the list.

I would recommend a cold shower until you get back to normal :-) This would be a very expensive undertaking unless you were also able to line up a lot of production contracts from other labels. You are talking about a lot of specialised industrial machinery and raw materials, and I'm sure that stuff needs regular maintenance as well as correct operation. And producing vinyl is both a smaller market and a more difficult job than CD. All the small electronic labels I have ever bought releases from subcontracted the duplication to another company. Sorry to pour cold water on your idea, but if you do not already know what/where to buy then you are probably not ready to take on such a risky investment. The back pages of Electronic Musician have lots of ads from duplication houses, I guess you could start by calling them and asking what equipment they offer to their customers. When I cut a record at Ron Murphy's Sound Enterprise, he had a Neumann record cutting lathe for sale -- he thought the Hardwax guys were going to buy it but I don't know if they did. He was asking $40,000. After you cut a lacquer it needs to be plated with metal, which is another specialized industrial operation. Pressing involves large, expensive machinery, careful handling of toxic substances, and technicians with unique skills. If you really want to get involved you're talking about a huge investment of time and money, learning all sorts of skills that have nothing to do with music. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

From: snoogans <snoogans@ev1.net> After my previous comment, I did read something in a DJ magazine 6 months ago about some company launching a 'home' vinyl press for something like $3000 in the not-too-distant future. So maybe that would be an option if you just wanted to put out 100 white labels at a time or do your own mastering. But remember that with music gear you usually get what you pay for, it will probably not meet the standards of a professional vinyl pressing business. The blanks are still pretty expensive. More for people who want to make a few dub plates than do an actual pressing.
