EVE:N though it samples rap!%$@ Musicians working in the rap genre have to be incredibly on top of everything lyrically (not an easy thing to do), and also production, djing skills etc. etc. Electronic music owes a GREAT debt to rap and similair styles for making the usage of sequenced beats etc. acceptable to the general populace. Take a look at some of the great rap artists, and you will find an incredibly wealth of musical talent..... Sorry... but could you give us an example of these so-called "great" rap artists? One's that don't rip samples from otherwise classic songs, or that don't contain obsessant profanity pointing out how "hard done by" the artist is? I didn't grow up the 'hood, but I find that rap is an outlet for rage and anger geared towards young black males that don't know any better than to 'buy' scads of cds by artists that churn out mindless amounts of repetitive drivel speaking of some woman's 'bootie' they 'boned' last night. I find rap to be complete crap quite plain and simple. The days of creativity have obviously run out with todays rap, and if you think electronic artists should look towards rap as influence, the genre itself will be ruined. Just my two cents :) - Dan J. ----- Original Message ----- From: "JK" <k-rad@swbell.net> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Saturday, June 30, 2001 3:17 AM Subject: Re: [idm] Aphex Twin - Drukqs

check out deltron 3030, which has kid koala as dj, or del the funky homosapein, for instances of hip hop that's actually hip hop (and not gangsta) as anyone on this list will point out, the music you hear on the radio or mtv isn't always representative of all music. cheers, /derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- now on the interweb --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Hmm... I didn't think so many people would have their own views on this, but I should explain a bit more about what I meant. 'Rap' is a very generic word that most of you probably include many genres under. Including most likely hip-hop, R&B, etc. I find these to be separate genres all together. The music industry has been kind enough to give us 1,294 different genres and rap has become smaller and smaller since. I personally love listening to DJ Shadow, Amon Tobin and other Ninja Tune goods, but I would consider it hip-hop and also very creative. It's not RAP. Rap consists of (like I mentioned before) some black teens or twenty-somethings spouting garbage while they treat every woman they see like pieces of yesterdays rotten meat. I'm too tired to go on, and I need breakfast, but I hope you understand what I meant a bit more... - Dan J. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dan John" <djohn1@home.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Sunday, July 01, 2001 1:57 AM Subject: Re: [idm] Aphex Twin - Drukqs

I was watching Wildlife on One this evening on the BBC, and the music was done by Elizabeth Parker, who used to work at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and still does loads of sountrack work. Well, as you can guess from my mentioning it here, it was totally IDM :-) So much so in fact that I stopped paying much attention to the lifestyle of the praying mantis and spent most of it listening to the background music. I can't find anything first-hand about EP on the web, she seems not to have a homepage of her own or list herself in directories. But her music is straight up this list's street. Does anyone know if she has released any solo stuff? Anig Browl _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
