it seemed to me that state-side techno always fell into two categories:
-- what you as an IDM fan might call it, i.e. "detroit"-variety
techno (Derrick May, Carl Craig, et al.)
-- what your snickering, non-IDM-listening friends might call it,
i.e. "videogame" music ("Mortal Combat", "The Fast and the Furious"
(while we're on the subject of cars), et al.)
then there's the "german techno" that bifurcated into the love parade
and the hardcore industrial varieties.
perhaps some autechre tracks from days past would classify as
industrial, but that's stretching it a bit. certainly there's some
gescom that might qualify.
i guess it depends on where you're coming from.
