Hey all. I'm trying to get a compilation together of some of the more mellow IDM tracks out there. Songs like: Squarepusher - Iambic 5 Poetry Autechre - Nil Amon Tobin - Easy Muffin U-ziq - 56 the best of BoC Just the favourite mellow ones is what I want (you know...the classics). Nothing that'll make you fall asleep or anything. Any and every suggestion will be greatly appreciated. You're better off sticking to BoC and ae if you want QUALITY mellow tracks. Arovane aren't all that great. I'm sure I'll get hate mail for this, but I'd love to hear about other's apathy towards this unremarkable music. On Wed, 20 Jun 2001, Helix Tradesman wrote:

Hear, hear! "Tides" put me to sleep, and not because it was mellow and soothing, but because it's "unremarkable" and boring. It's making me yawn to think about it.... And the harpsichord playing on that last track is very near to being *completely* uninspired. That instrument has far too much potential for melodic ingenuity to be wasted on a few repeated notes.... *yawn* -Ryan At 03:01 PM 6/20/2001 -0600, you wrote:

I just picked up Tides last week and my impression of it is the same. First few songs are nice, but sound like a talented fanboy's tribute to the BoC 'formula', and then the album just gets boring. I have mp3s from their other album, and I like it a LOT better than Tides from what I've heard. --- Ryan Schilling <ryanschilling@subdimension.com> wrote:

Some good mellow trax... Track/Artist/Album Mellow all around... Track 8/Aphex/SAWII Airlock Homes/Fila Brazillia/A Touch of Cloth Amon Tobin/Nova/Permutation ** for a beautiful version of this with lyrics (albeit in portugese), check track 1 of Bebel Gilberto's "Tanto Tempo" Radiohead/Kid A/Kid A Twin Hum/Delarosa & Asora/Schematic Mellow atmosphere, driving beat... Small Energies/Plaid/Trainer Light The Last Flare/Two Lone Swordsmen/Stay Down Juju/Mouse on Mars/Autoditacker Suzuki/Tosca/Suzuki Banstyle-Sappy's Curry/Underworld/Second Toughest... Wishbone Be Broken/Machine Drum/Now You Know For a classic mellow track that's not technically IDM but is historically significant to the genre, how bout Steve Reich's "Electric Counterpoint"? Also... Any of Mad Professor's dub mixes of Massive Attack tracks would work. Almost anything off of Theivery Corporation's "The Mirror Conspiracy" Anything at all off of Aspen's "Are You That Retail Snob", but esp. track 9 Probably too much information here, sorry. Hope this helps. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! I'm *still* in love with Nick Willscher's "Solutiore of Stareau" disks, disk 1 in particular. Disk 1 luckily just saw release a few weeks ago, and is available through the Infraction label at Riouxs Records (www.riouxs.com). Here's some reviews, since they can explain what it is better than I can. One thing of note is that it sounds like many of the sounds used on the disk are sourced from guitar. I'm not sure whether it's the actual case, but it's very organic sounding, and incredibly diverse for using only a few sounds. ZAMMUTO - Solutiore of Stareau : Disc 1 CD (Infraction) U.S. $11.50 Arising from a mammoth triple CDR released by Nick Willscher (aka Zammuto) a few years back as a private pressing, Infraction brings to light disc one of the Solutiore of Stareau trilogy (following the Apt. B records release of disc three entitled, simply, willscher). This disc one is a quiet atmospheric minimal soundscape. Distant radio waves floating in the night, warm drones rising and falling, punctured by a faint yet insistant pulsing rhythm. Deep listening in which surface variation is so subtle - getting lost in the recording for hours is almost inevitable if you give it the time. Time well spent. [INFX 002] "Zammuto: SOLUTIORE OF STAREAU - DISC ONE (Infraction, 2001) A really pleasing long album of glitchy ambient sound, unfolding like a meditation. I find it more interesting than a lot of "clicks and cuts" electronic music; it might have to do with the concrete textures and the sense of constant shifting: from the opening silence, there's the persistence of tape hiss, a kind of whispering, popping husk, congealing at times into almost-rhythms that fade away, or break into other combinations. Throbbing drones and harmonics flow over this arrangement, broken apart by the editing process, so there's this kind of reflexive sense of the recording process; but more important, one's attention is jerked back to the thousand varieties that the static takes. And _static_ this record is, though the pleasures are in the micro-events. Beautiful, gentle, and recommended." - scott handley. Zammuto, _Solutiore of Stareau_ (Infraction) "The premiere release on Ohio record shop Rioux´s new label Infraction, overseen by Jason Bryant (who also designed the suggestively-minimalistic cover art) is in fact a re-release. Several years back, Nick Willscher, trading under the name Zammuto, privately released an ambient trilogy, of which this disc is the first installment (the third disc was previously made more widely available on the Apt. B label). The darkly quiet, enticingly distant landscape spread over fourteen tracks is in sum actually one long, seventy minute suite of some bonafide beauty, not entirely unlike the minimalist sounds recently generated by, say, Jonathan Coleclough. The only problem this reviewer has with _Solutiore of Stareau_ is the fact that while this nimbly composed and subtle music eggingly draws the listener in, his willingness to enter into this alien landscape is often repulsed by recurring, out of synch metallic glitches (borrowed from Oval?) mixed way up front. This however is a personal prejudice; other listeners will perhaps find these electronic clicks to be rhythms by which to orient themselves. During roughly the last quarter of the piece, it becomes quiet Enoesque, _On Land_-ish, if you will. In the final analysis, this is a strong, well thought-out piece of warm, subtle drones, thin ethereal radio waves, and enough colour and slowly-evolving variation to keep listeners coming back for further journeys of discovery. It is only hoped that the second part of the trilogy is granted wider availability." - Stephen Fruitman, Umea University, Umea, Sweden. ------- eggytoast.com ------- now updated daily --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I like this thread. :) I'll give some not-so-obscure-but-so-far-unmentioned tracks. ae - "Krib" from Cichli Suite. "VI scose poise" is pretty mellow, don't know if you'd consider good, though I do. Plaid - "Eyen," "New Family," and "Sincetta" from Double Fig. Hell, any featuring Mara and/or Benet on vox. Whole bunch from Trainer, esp. on the second disc, not sure of the names though. The remix by Ellis Island Sound of Two Lone Swordsmen on 10+3, disc 2. Lee "Do your dreams come true?" "I haven't had a nice dream for years."

Krib is an absolute must! I really dig the tracks you mentioned from Double Figure too, but I'm at odds over whether to put Sincetta or Eyen on there. I like 'em both a lot. Also Aphex Twin - Nannou Autechre - Outpt or Vletrmx21 (or half a dozen others :-) ) Boards of Canada - anything from Music has the Right to Children. Aquarius in particular. BTW, that Boards of Canada album is a favourite of mine, but I can't help feeling a bit short changed by some of the 45-second long tracks. I mean it's nice that they're there, but I feel a bit teased by the way something starts brilliantly and then ends 8 bars later, as if they changed their minds. 'Kaini Industries' in particular makes me feel like this: an absolutely gorgeous melodic loop on a sort of melting slap bass (?!) that plays for about 30 seconds and then gives way to an unremarkable hand percussion loop for a few more bars before fading away. I felt so let down the first time I heard it, I thought it was going to turn into a monster steam train of a track instead of sputtering out. Every so often I'm tempted to try sampling that melody and building something bigger around it. Anig Browl _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I'm not trying to come off as "pretentious art guy", but I think that alot of the BoC stuff is a perfect example of less being more. I must admit that I found the short track times to be a welcome change from what seems to be the default idm track length of approximately 6 minutes. There's more emotion and intensity in those 45 second thingies than alot of 7-13 minute tracks out there. I'm not saying "I'm right, you're wrong" by any means, I'm just offering my opinion cause I was out late watching Bullfrog/Kid Koala last night and I don't feel like working just yet. I sold my soul for rock and roll. Marcus Eoin of BoC: "Someone criticized me once," recalls Eoin, "and asked why we?d made ?Roygbiv? so short. For us, that is exactly how long it should be. It?s like that famous bit at the end of ?Strawberry Fields? by The Beatles, where you get the little voice at the end that says something like ?I buried Paul?, and it happens once, and it?s such a transitory thing that?s mixed in one ear really far away, but people went on and on about it for decades." ===== http://www.rootrec.net/elephnt .:winblad.donald.ichiro:. <narcoleptic priest> __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I think that's part of the appeal. Would you rather they just not include the tracks at all? To me, I get the impression that Mike and Marcus had the melodies, and just though "you know, this is already really good, i don't wanna mess it up." Sometimes you just come up with little things that sound really good, but probably wouldn't work as songs. It's a lot easier to do with melodies than rhythm. I'd rather hear those things and appreciate them for what they are than not hear them at all. I'm personally in love with "triangles and rhombuses;" I wish the melody would just go on forever :D On a technical note, almost all the melodies in songs are relatively simple and drawn out, while the melody-snippets tend to be quite a bit more complex. I personally think including them on the album was a great decision, and really makes the album "sticky" cheers, /derek --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Can't go wrong with Boards of Canada. Word on the street is that the Incunabula cd is pretty good (Kalpol intro/Bike are primo!). Many titles from In the Nursery especially Deco or their soundtracks for Asphalt and Man with a Movie Camera. (I wonder why they aren't mentioned on the list more.) If you really want to expand your horizons, try the 16th and 17th century choral stylings of G.P. da Palestrina or Christobal de Morales. No glitch to be found, but could be the most beautiful music ever. (Has nobody sampled this sort of stuff and put some pounding beats to it? That would be tasty.) Guilty :-)

Yes, I see your point. I guess I like to hear development going on too. That 'Kaini Industries' track I mentioned always sounds to me like a killer hook in search of a percussion track (marriage only). Perhaps this is because I'm also making music, so a nice loop in isolation is nothing remarkable to me (though I wish mine were as melodic as BoCs!); instead my response is, 'great start, what's coming next?'. OTOH I can't deny that it's very insightful for me as a muso to hear someone else's little sketches on their own. Anig Browl _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
