I got one for Christmas and was very disappointed in comparison to the Kaoss pad. The effects sound nice enough, except they can only be used as a dry+wet and not wet only, which is a bummer. Also, it lacks any memory-based effects (delay, reverb) and doesn't have a sampler like the Kaoss pad. My biggest beef is the actual implementation of the 3-d control. It's very picky, and you can go from 0 to 100% of an effect within an inch or two, it's very difficult to control with any accuracy. Neat idea, but not really too useful imo.....go for the Kaoss pad instead. At 05:58 PM 1/8/2001 -0800, you wrote:

careful, this is not a choice to make lightly, there are major disadvantages with an ALL pc system. i would NEVER give up my outboards. 1. you never have enough processing power [no matter how much you keep adding] 2. things always have more (cross over) noise in a PC, or static [so go all digital if you can] 3. instability is a major issue PC sugestions depend on your budget. there are SOOOO many options, I can't possibly help you unless you are a bit more specific... you might want multi-HD recording, or only 2 outs, or no midi, or all midi, or digital, or soundfonts... or only mastering on the pc,... or mixing on the pc... or maybe you also want a sampler with effcts built in? or maybe you want to use protools? or maybe you want to use reaktor and reason? or maybe you want to use cakewalk? dual boot system? all scsi? The list of options goes on......... ~thinking about giving up my outboard gear to go ~all-pc. any suggestions on system specs, o.s., and/or ~software? thanks in advance. ~ ~winblad.donald.ichiro --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah, worse still, to add to all this, you gotta think about a platform: Windows or MacOS??? If you can afford it, MacOS is the way to go - all in all, including hardware and software (taking into account that most PC software is available free if you have a net connection, the spare time, and an appropriately aligned conscience) MACs are about twice the price... Simple question dude, what is your budget? If you don't have enough budget, you may have to think about not going 100% PC...also, what sorta stuff do you want to do? I know a few guys who do dance music, and for them, they just use PC and a decent sampler (Akai S3000 or something...) - then they just use the PC for creating the building blocks on, and the sampler for tune construction, all controlled by the PC - works a treat...personally, my setup of all PC works a treat for me, but I'm a soundscape phreek, so I need something like a PC...if I was beat orientated (thats oriented in americanis(z)ed english) at all, then I would need something like a sampler, just to play around with stuff... Give us your budget, styles, and any other info... :) RoNAn P.S. If you are doing the PC route...go portable...you'll never go back... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Astaplatz" <sebastian@arctone.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Sunday, June 17, 2001 7:17 PM Subject: RE: [idm] gear question

thanks to "bill burroughs" and "astaplatz" for the information pertaining to my gear question. overall, it made me realize a few things: 1.) i don't know much about pc/mac and their role in making music; 2.) i should figure out what i want to accomplish first; and 3.) maybe i should just stick with my outboard gear, learn that first, then integrate a pc into the mix later. anyway, thanks again. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
