Details:
construction 3 - a hyper-concerto for soprano sax and computer
construction 3 is a multiple media work by Tony Myatt (Director
of Musical Technology Research at the University of York (UK))
and Peter Fluck(kinetic sculptor).
construction 3 has been realised by the Real-time Interactive
Multiple Media Project, a collaboration between the University
of York Music Department (UK), IRCAM (France) and SIMPK
(Germany) which is supported by the European Commission
Information Society Technologies Programme. It incorporates a
live performer (Jonathan Eato) on soprano saxophone,
three-dimensional sculpture, computer generated graphics and
ambisonic surround sound. construction 3 is a synergetic
composition - the musical and graphical elements of the piece
have been composed concurrently. Both the computer graphics and
music are triggered by the saxophonists natural gestures,
through infra-red video tracking, electronic sensors, machine
listening and gesture recognition using neural networks. All
components of the piece will be performed live using a Silicon
Graphics Origin 2000 High Performance Parallel Computer in three
dimensional surround sound. It will be premiered on June 22 and
24 at 2000 hours in Berlin at the Curt Sachs Saal of the
Staatliches Institut für Musikforschung PK.
The concert will also feature Expanse Hotel - Las Vegas Mix by
Ambrose Field, winner of the 2000 International de Musique et
dArt Sonore Electroacoustiques de Bourges Prix, Linfinitá by
Tony Myatt and The Utility of Space by Natasha Barrett.
Tony Myatt and Peter Flucks collaboration began in 1996 with
Chaotic Constructions, a kinetic art and music installation
using real time algorithmic composition software and video
tracking to generate soundtracks from the movement of kinetic
sculptures. It has been exhibited throughout Europe and Hong
Kong including the 1997 Edinburgh Festival and Festiventu,
Calvi, Corsica. It has also made several concert hall
appearances in the UK. Chaotic Constructions was given a Herald
Angel Award by the Glasgow Herald for the best piece of visual
art at the 1997 Edinburgh Festival, and the International
Critics Award as part of the 1997 Demarco European Art
Foundation exhibition. For more information please contact Lucy
