heh,
since people have been mentioning the whole mf doom and kmd thing, thought
i'd point out that hiding away on emusic are 'operation doomsday' by mf doom
+ 2 kmd releases:
http://www.emusic.com/labels/4820/
..sure, it's only 128k and so on, but if they're sometimes tricky to source,
you could do worse. [dunno if they're taken from the bad quality cd someone
mentioned, mind.]
as far as emusic.com goes, not only did it get bought by universal (and the
actual transaction is going through any day now), but mp3.com also just got
bought by universal. heehee, the majors stuck it out and are hoovering up
what's left of the net music businesses at fractions of their former values
(mp3.com was valued at 3 billion at its highest, universal picked it up for
300 million, emusic was picked up for 15-20 million when they had 10 million
sitting in the bank!).
anyhow, i'm beginning to get increasingly bad vibes about the whole
emusic.com thing, since right now all the releases are unencrypted and
freely distributable mp3s (good!), and i've heard that Duet (the universal
subscription 'mp3' program!) was one of the ones demonstrated for congress
recently, and many of them are using not only encrypted digital formats, but
also rental, not buying periods (10 bucks gets you 75 tunes.. for a month!
at which point, they expire. umm, fuck that?)
so, since emusic is due to be rolled into Duet sometime in the next few
months, unless they decide to keep it separate in some weird way, there's a
danger that the evil major-label business ethos (see DivX) will overwhelm
the relatively nice (and, ok, ever-so-slightly-incompetent) emusic ethos.
but i'm still hoping not.
[as a side note, there's lots of amusing issues within emusic that i'm sure
Universal haven't picked up on - for example, lots of minor labels doing
lots of unauthorised sampling, and there's even Sid Vicious doing 'Belsen's
A Gas' in the emusic archives - hardly politically correct. and it always
amuses me when Anal Cunt makes the Top 10 downloads and emusic abbreviate it
to A C on the main page :P]
anyhow, that was a big ramble. i think my point was - if you're interested
in getting a bunch of decent legal mp3s off emusic.com, sign up for a month
or 3 months _now_ and leech the hell outta the site - there's over 170,000
mp3s up there now. i'm not sure the site will be the same in 6 months. but i
could be wrong, and sincerely hope i am :)
later,
h0l.
