UK bobbies fight crime - with lollipops
May 25 2001 at 07:07AM
London - British police are to hand out lollipops and play soothing
music to nightclubbers at closing time to stop drunken brawls, it was
reported on Friday.
The novel approach to policing is to be adopted by police in
Leicestershire, central England, The Times newspaper said.
Police Inspector Daimon Tilley said the sweets and the music, theme
tunes from children's television programmes, will help revellers
rediscover their inner child and make them forget violent urges.
The scheme will initially be piloted at four nightclubs in Leicester city
centre, which has been troubled by late-night disorder.
"I got the idea from an American professor of psychology," Tilley
was quoted as saying in The Times.
"His argument was that if such music was played instead of a
thumping beat, people are reminded of their childhood and won't
want to seek a confrontation." - Sapa-AFP
