Twine . DJ Veins . Warmdesk
Speak in Tongues
Cleveland, Ohio, USA
19 May 2001
Anyone familiar with Speak in Tongues probably knows that nothing there gets
moving til
well toward midnight. So my friends and I hopped in the car around 11 pm and
got there
still about 20 minutes prior to Twine's set. Unfortunately not very many
people attended
the show, with an attendance of what was probably less than 50, on a Saturday
night,
no less. Then again, Cleveland is not necessarily known for its hip electronic
underground, so on with the review:
Locally-based Twine (Greg Malcolm in this instance) treated the audience to a
slightly
shorter set (45 min or so roughly) of dense, rich atmospheres. The live Twine
set has
certainly come a long way from earlier days where heavy breakbeats tended to
dominate; now there are hardly beats at all, with an equally soothing yet
unsettling
blend of textures, ambience, tones and drones. The highlight of the set was
towards the
latter half in which the high-pitched buzz of a lamp droned over a thick wash
of ambient
guitar and reverberation.... as one audience member commented, it's something
to lose
yourself in, without wanting to come back out. In this sense it was
unfortunate that the
set was so short, but not the least bit disappointing otherwise.
Warmdesk, in town from Chicago, then presented a set that had more variety and
was
more active in general. It was a healthy blend of more straight-forward
rhythmic, clean
IDM (not necessarily very melodic) and experimental twists and turns. Often
times
conventional looped patterns gave way to unusual filter effects, and tracks
tended to
disintegrate into one another. Those familiar with Warmdesk from the Bip-Hop
v.2 disc
should keep an eye out for his upcoming full-length; if this set was any
indication it will
be worthwhile.
DJ Veins spun a top-notch set of experimental techno and IDM before and
between sets,
crossing over between more typical sounds like Mouse on Mars to less expected
tracks
from Irdial, etc. Also, Phase4 was responsible for a mesmerizing set of
visuals, with an
array of video loops that complemented both the artists and the DJ quite well.
Despite the rather thin turnout, it was overall a good show, and I'm glad I
was there.
Anyone in NY should check out the Warmdesk show coming up, although Twine will
not
be playing to the best of my knowledge.
